hi guys i have a small problem and im not sure what to do.

ive been living in a block of flats for a couple of years, and for the first time in weeks i listened to music on my pc around 4 in the afternoon. it wasnt too loud, but within 5 minutes my new neighbour knocked on the door and asked me to turn it down. i apologised to him, introduced myself, shook hands and it was a civil encounter. the problem is, he told me he works nights, 7 nights on, 7 off.

im normally a headphone type of guy anyway, but occasionally, i like to play music via my speakers. i dont want to offend anyone so i geneally play it mid afternoon, maybe once a week.

now im not sure what to do here. do i just tip toe round this guy?

its a minor problem, but with neighbours over a period of time, could become an issue.

any advice is appreciated

thanks

Buy a pair of the biggest subs you can afford, put rap music in CD player, turn volume to 11. Don't be a push over. Next time the jackass comes over answer door w/ shotgun in your hand.

Just say I was told that I could listen to the radio at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven, I told Bill that if Sandra is going to listen to her headphones while she's filing then I should be able to listen to the radio while I'm collating so I don't see why I should have to turn down the radio because I enjoy listening at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven.

Honestly though, check with your strata/manager to see if there are rules and times for when you can listen to your music at a reasonable volume. Most places have some sort of quiet time that you need to adhere to, but the other times you are allowed to make a reasonable amount of noise. If he comes and bugs you again, just show him the rules, if he continues to bug you, get the manager to intervene.

Are you British? If so, I'd think a somewhat strongly-worded missive might do the trick.

hi clowntard, not answering the door sounds like a good idea, but i can imagine the situation could explode, in time.

i wish i react different in awkward moments. i end up sounding like a pussy.

baked, no shotgun, but have a louisville slugger behind the door ;)

oh well, back to being a pussy again

edit, thanks for the advice KT, i'll ask my local council, and see what they say.
one of the problems i have is, some of my mp3 vary in volume, some much louder than others. today i just ended up lowering and upping the volume all the time.. didnt enjoy any of the music.

an hour of music a week isnt unreasonable is it? maybe i should invite him round for a coffee and say something

thanks guys

4 in the afternoon, you should be able to do whatever you want. Next time, tell him to fook himself.

hey we all do.
but hes gotta respect your basic rights.
he doesnt pay rent there, you do.
and if you arent cranking it, well then hes just going to have to deal.
sometimes, unfortunately being a prick is the only thing some people will understand.

when i worked graveyard i used my next door neighbors vw bug as an alarm. he would leave everyday at 220pm, and even with 2 mufflers that sucker was loud as hell. it pissed me off at first, but what can he do about it? noise laws here are 10p to 10a in mesa. or 1030 i forget. i also got stopped by a cop whose apartment i drove past daily at 630am to work because he thought my motorcycle was too loud. he was off duty and complained that it disrupted his morning. he wasnt even asleep, having just gotten home at 630. he was laughed out of the court room.

id say he will deal with it, but it will probably be a bone of contention between you guys if its a regular thing. i also cant imagine a laptop playing music is enough to wake a person in the next apartment.

if you want to be a good neighbor use headphones or do something about your subwoofer. raise it off the ground and keep it away from his wall, or leave it off. if you don't use one then your walls are thin as paper and i suppose you just have to keep it down.

if you want to be an ass, leave them turned all the way up before you leave in the mornings and set an mp3 alarm (repeating) to go off around 9am ;)

I don't know what kind of soundcard/media player you have, but some have settings that help regulate big differences in volume between different files to help avoid that. Creative has a setting called SVM (smart volume management). And Winamp has a group of settings under Replay Gain (about halfway down the page), that help with volume management.
