Need a little advice on a new M/B choice for Q9450 Yorkfield...

OK....I'm planning on a fairly major upgrade on my main rig, in steps.

Currently, I'm running a Xeon 3210 on an Intel BX2 motherboard w/ 4 x 1GB Crucial Ballistix RAM.

I plan on upgrading in steps with the MB first (in the next week or two...I'm tired of the BX2), then the cpu when it becomes available. I'm going to keep the RAM, at least for a while.

My requirements do not include RAID, but I do want Crossfire compatibility w/my new MB. (Plan on either 3850 or 3870 in Crossfire.)

So, what would you recommend as to which chipset/motherboard would best serve for me....need it to last minimum of a year before being replaced. Oh, and it'll be on pretty much 24/7.

Thanks for the advice, y'all!

Well there are many threads already on which mb is best so you might want to use the search function to find some of them. I would recommend one based on the newer intel chipsets like x38 if you want to use ddr2 or a mix of ddr2 & 3 ram and if you want to use ddr3 exclusively then get one based on the x48 chipset.

Up until last year I ran amd/nvidia mb's. I got my current mb because of my previous experience with nvidia chipsets however intel chipsets perform better. I recently replaced the mb in my sons pc with an abit ix38 quadgt and it performs very well, much better than my 650i chipset does. If you get an x38/x48 based mb it will give you the best performance with the intel cpu plus has crossfire capability. Based upon what I've read the abit ix38 quadgt and gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 are good mb's to use ddr2 on. Goodluck with whatever you decide to get. Oh and don't forget to ditch the stock hsf and get a good aftermarket unit with a decent mounting backplate to keep it firmly attached.

Yeah, I've heard that, but it's going into a windowed Silverstone -07 case and, I'm sorry, but the board is just butt ugly. Wish I could replicate the BX2's color scheme in an X38 or the like and still have good OC'ing.

Still toying around with the Abit IP35 boards, but I have had bad experiences with Abit in years past (way past, but once you get burned by a brand, hard to trust it again.....)
