Need a laser printer that does decent photos ......why? I am basically tired of buying ink so often for my inkjet printer.

A decently priced one would be nice too, I know laser printers can get expensive. But id be willing to spend $700 if that is what it takes.

thanks

If you think printing photos on an inkjet is expensive, wait until you see what color laser supplies cost...

And even a $100 inkjet printer will print better quality photos these days than many high end color laser printers.

BentValve, you may have a good basic idea except for one problem, color lasers technology just will not do photoprinting.

But yes, excellent photo printing can be done by even cheap inkjet printers, but if you want excellent quality and inexpensive too, you simply can't use OEM ink. You basically have to refill your own cartridges which usually now means no longer in production non-chipped Canons and Epson ink jets.

With careful shopping on ebay, you should be able to find a used non-chipped Canon, and if photoprinting is your sole priority, knocking down a i950 or i960 would buy you, what is still today regarded as the best photo printer ever made.

But knocking down a pixma ip4000 or 5000 would be almost as good and do general purpose printing as well. And the following MP models use the IP4000 printing engine, namely the MP, 750,760, and 780.

Color laser printers are designed for office color - Spreadsheets, colored text, etc. They really do not excel at photographs. If you care at all about quality you should give this idea up and buy a Canon inkjet.

Take your pics to a Kodak photo Kiosk, that's probably the cheapest option.

Actually the cheapest option is online sites like mpix.com
http://www.mpix.com/

They are doing a 50% off sale so 8x10 prints are $1 each. They also have 4x6 prints at 20 cents each almost always. I keep a color inkjet for local prints but anything like 5+ photos I use online services.

no chance, laser is not for photo.
if you want cheap photo upload to costco walgreens or walmart etc. they deal with the inks and all the rest..why bother yourself.

Thanks for the replies everyone and especially thanks to Lemon Law, non-chipped?

Ive looked a bit on Ebay and there are many of the printers you mentioned and it looks like they have a demand so you must be 100% correct about them.

So there are no new printers in which you can refill your own ink cartridges? Why not?

thanks

Hey guys, how about listing some of the current inkjet's with longer lasting ink cartridges, or are all of them about the same?
I currently use a Canon ip2600 which does a fine job but has very tiny ink cartridges.

thanks

The reason is a lot of printer makers got wise to the fact that people were refilling the ink cartridges. So in a money grubbing attempt, they "chipped" the cartridges. What that does, is even if it it is refilled, the printer thinks it is empty. There are some models that this can be bypassed on. And now, a lot of newer printer have gone to the "ink tank system" where you have about 6 color tanks. These are easy to refill, but you do need to change the printhead after say 2-3 years as they do wear out. On older models, printhead is part of the ink cartridge, hence the high cost for them.
