I need a pretty decent sum to help a friend out(talking about in the thousands)....unfortunately, I dont have enough right now, but want to help out as much as I can. The money will be used, and then, will be paid back in about 3 months or so.

what is the best way to do it? the only thing I can think of is cash advance my credit cards. are their other ways? the interest doesn't sound interesting though....

can I use credit card to buy a money order or check, and mail to my friend? will this work for internationally too?

Take out a loan. Talk to your bank or employer.

You'll get raped if you do cash advance on credit card.

Pawn?

Make sure you get a contract between you and your friend. Even though they may be your bestest friend, with the amount of money you are talking, somethign that will hold up in court if need be would be nice.

Yes, talk to your bank/credit union.

My bank always has unsecured loans available at really good rates.

Why isn't your friend doing this him(or her)self?

Helping a friend for several thousand dollars is kind but not obligatory in any sense of the word. You can be a friend by suggesting things but it doesn't require you to lend a cent - and loaning several thousand dollars is something else altogether - even stupid, some might say.

As Shakespeare wrote, "...Neither a borrower nor a lender be, for the loan oft loses both itself and friend..."

Edit: you're going to loan money to a friend internationally as a student? That is DUMB, unless you're independently wealthy (and my guess is you're not).

Your not getting a loan most likely then. What the heck does your friend need that kind of money for? And why from you?

I'm going to say that this doesn't sound very good. I'd tell the friend that you are sorry and you can't help him/her. It isn't your responsibility. In most cases like this you'll never see a dime of that money back. It doesn't matter how good of a friend they were.

If the friend is in a real emergency, then tell the local news station and set up a donation fund. You'll have your money in no time. If this seems silly, then so is lending thousands of dollars that you don't have internationally.

Woah...I didn't see that you're sending this large sum of money internationally...

Be careful. There are lots of people out there who trade their best friends for several thousand dollars...

I will never let anyone borrow that much money without collateral. That is a large amount to let anybody borrow including family or friends. If he is really serious about needing the money, he will give you something greater than the amount of the money you're going to lent him. Otherwise, he is going to take your money and run. I wouldn't do it. One of my friend let his cousin borrow $10,000 supposedly for some kind of emergency that was to be paid in full with interest within 6 months. My friend never saw his cousin or his money again.

If you live at home, what do your parents have to say about you lending that kind of money to a friend?

how is that movie obscure?

Edit: Lend money only if you are comfortable with the possibility that you may never be repaid.

Cash advance (IF you believe you will be paid back in 3 :) months) or some credit cards have BT checks you can cash.

Does this friend of yours happen to have breasts?

You sound gullible.

meh, maybe I'm different but if my best friends came to me an said they needed a few grand I would "lend" it to them. Or course knowing full well that I may never see that money again. Its only money and when a friend really reaches out to you (or family member) you come through.

a few questions:

1. where is this friend located? (i.e. if it's a country where the avg annual income is in the 100's or 1000's of dollars, don't do it)

2. how do you know this person? (internet only friend - don't do it. best friend of 20 years who happens to be overseas - maybe.)

3. exactly how much money are they asking for?

If any of the above questions are too personal to post online, then DO NOT send any money, it means that whoever it is is trying to scam you.

Ask yourself this: If i were to ask my parents to loan this person money (instead of me loaning them the money), would my parents do it? i.e. Is this person such a good friend to me that my parents would go out on a limb for him/her? If the answer is anything but a resounding "YES, DEFINITELY", don't do it.
