Need a laptop recommendation in the 2500-3000 price range (from Best Buy)

EDIT: Well looks like things have changed quite a bit, I can now afford to look at machines in the 2500-3000 price range but the laptop has to be from Best Buy. I looked over their selections and they really don't have many machines that interest me. Anyone know if Best Buy can special order something even if its not listed on their website?

I'm looking to replace a Dell Presario x1000 with another affordable laptop. It does'nt have to be the fastest or most up to date, I primarily want it for light gaming (games like Baldur's Gate, etc..) and dvd watching. Also I need for the display to do at least 1600x1200, more would be better though. Finally I'd like to buy from a company with a good warranty/service plan. Is it possible to find this in the 1200-1500 price range?

Maybe around 1500 price range. What your looking for is a good Pentium M processor(try 1.7ghz and up, and make sure it's the Dothan chipset...although there may be a newer one out by now but i don't think it's affordable). Anyways, 512mb ram probably. As far as screen resolutions go 1600x1200 is about what you'll get for good screen quality/resolution on most laptops I believe. Anything higher would not look good at all, and may not even be playable for some games.

There are Sony Vaio's out there i think for around $1600 and their screen quality is awesome. Nice glossy screen type. They are a little bit expensive though and I think maybe HP has a better deal on their laptops which also include Widescreen versions. Their a little bit for size(you know, kinda wide), but they pack some power and good dvd quality when playing movies. I use mine(zx5000 for movies and games like baldur's gate/starcraft), and it works ok. it's widescreen though, so playing starcraft was a little weird at first.

Dell also may have a solution for you, although whether the laptop they offer is quality or not i'm not sure. I don't buy from them.

Get whatever is closest to these specs in your price range:

Pentium M 740 or faster
1024mb memory
80 gig or bigger HD
DVD+-RW Drive
ATi Radeon or nVidia GforceGo video

For games, the video card is the most important part. Anything the DOES NOT have a Radeon or GeforceGo video chip will run like crap.

The most expensive laptop on the bestbuy website is $2999.99. If you have that much to spend just get the one with the best specs..
