Mom got her license and will soon need a laptop. She has been fine with a slow machine for a while (Celeron that is upgraded to Prescott 3.0Ghz, 1.5GB of RAM) at home, has bad eyes (refuse to use netbook, want something 14-15 inches), and don't mind hauling a lot of weight.
So I'm trying to narrow the choices down to something either very cheap but good reliability, or a business notebook.
Cheap: various Acer celeron or AMD Athlon single core with 1.6Ghz and 2GB of RAM. 15.4" screen and I've seen them around for $300 free shipping. 6lb seems to be ok, are they any good?
Business: Thinkpad T/R/SL series is out because of the wait time (up to 4 weeks and more) and the expense. Dell Latitude 5500 or 6500 seems good but not sure. I am still using an Inspiron 500M at home and it seems to be good enough build quality wise after 5+ years.
Matted screen preferred, need it fast and no opinion about brand or OS (will wipe it out and put XP on it anyways, have a license at home).
