No crappy makes like Dell, Acer, HP, etc.

Seeking;
Sandy bridge cpu. Quad Core preferred but not mandatory.
HD6850M or better Gpu.
4gbs Ram Minimum.
17" Screen Minimum.
Win 7 64.
Good battery life is a must.

Backlit keyboard would be a nice touch.
Also I'd like it if I could hook up to an external display using DVI or at the minimum VGA.

I'm not sure if that's possible.

For example:
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Xplorer_X7-7500_Notebook/

The $999 setup has nearly everything except the video card. Opting for a high end card like the 6870(if you are even able to select it) will add few hundred dollars alone, looking at the prices from other manufacturers.

Going to a dual core won't save you much($100), and an graphics-switching setup(like Optimus) is pretty much required for good battery life, and high end GPUs don't have that. You need 77WHr battery to get 2 hours just Internet surfing: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4223/eurocom-racer-radeon-hd-6970m-rocks/6

Notch down the video card a step or two, or try to get another $400 or so.

This one from Dell has the specs, but its at $1500 just to give you an idea: http://configure.dell.com/dellstore...en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&model_id=alienware-m17x-r3

Or you can go for a 15.6-inch one, and you need only $100 more than your budget limit: http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Xplorer_X6-9300_Notebook/

Thanks so much inteluser.

The 999$ is pretty much perfect except for the GPU. Isn't the 540m on par with my ancient 8800gts?

The dell is nearly perfect except it's a dell.

Hmm decisions decisions. I guess I'll have to wait a bit for the prices to come down some to get what I want.
