I'd like to get a camera for my father to take with him when he goes out hunting and fishing. Suggestions?

The two you list in your title are the most popular in this area. They have a different "look and feel" than each other, so this tends to be the final deciding factor for the end buyer. The specs are basically the same for waterproofing, with the Olympus coming out on top for shock tests.

Play with both and make a decision based on handling... At least that's my recommendation.

(I have an older Pentax w10 and it's been fine for basic couple feet of water, splash, surf type use)

And someone else was just asking about this, so try to search the forum as well..

One thing which is not immediately apparent is that, when it comes to storage, the Olympus uses xD, the Pentax goes with SD... so if you've already invested in either one of these formats, it might be wise to continue.

From the few reviews I've read covering the water ratings, they have to be taken with a grain of salt. The required tests and standards have a lot of leeway to attain the ratings both of these cams have. Hard to say which is better based on what THEY tell you.

However, the new "winterized" feature on the latest Olympus would sell me if it truly makes a difference in cold temps. Most electronic, batter powered devices suffer in winter resulting in very low battery life. This combined with it's water and shock proofing make it the ultimate travel camera, especially if you like to snap shots while skiing or snowboarding..

Either way, get your hands on one of these and let that help make the decision. Usability is worth considering...
