Need a good tutorial for installing/understanding SSL...

I've got a dedicated debian webserver running apache, and have installed the debian packages for ssl - apache-ssl, libssl0.9.6, and openssl. Now I'm trying to find out what the next step I should take is. I don't need everything on the site to be secure, but wouldn't mind it either - soon it'll be storing information about all of our professors, including SSN, bibliographies, etc., and I need to make that stuff as secure as possible.

Anyway, recommendations? Do I have to buy certificates, since these are only being used internally? Or can I create my own?
