This is an upgrade for my Pastor's PC. He was previously using a Dell 433 MHz so this will be a HUGE upgrade! Pretty much Word Processing and Internet.

I can get a retail CPU for $49 shipped. What board would be a good choice to go with it? Would like to load XP or 2000 pro. I have 512 MH of PC133 CAS2 memory ready for it.

Thanks.

Trouble is finding a board for this platform. They are getting more and more rare. We use MSI 6368 at work... they have onboard LAN, Video and Sound and Tualy compatable.

Seems like since this year, the PIII based mobo's have been getting harder to find. Looks like Intel is intent in getting this platform off the market. Funny thing is, a 1.4 Tualy Celeron is still quite adequate for many needs. If all a person needs is internet and word processing, email and the like, this is more than enough. My current setup is a 1.0A Tualy overclocked to 133 FSB/1.33 Ghz (for better bandwidth) and it is plenty zippy for run-of-the-mill stuff. Only reason why I recently ordered an AMD XP 2500+ Barton setup is for 3D gaming performance.

I intend on keeping my current rig as a 2nd/backup box... something me and my daughter can play multiplayer games together with etc. It is still a nice system.

You can get a 1.8 Celly for $60 shipped from Googlegear, which will allow you to use a socket 478 MB, will allow a much greater upgrade path. Seriously, think about it.

While were at it then, you can get an Athlon XP 1700+ for around $45. Even if you don't O/C it, the performance is nearly on par with the 1.8 P4 based Celly, and it would beat it in 3D gaming.

The only place a Cel1.8 would even come close is in programs that use sse2 and even then it would be close.

I thought you had a Cel1.1 and needed a board for it.

Best bang for your buck is get a Shuttle MN31N board ($80-90) and a Athlon 1700+ ($45). Will be very fast and support future upgrades without breaking the bank.

Get a Chaintech 6VJD DDR motherboard its a VIA PRO266 chipset with DDR support, and you can find them for $30.00. You will need a FCPGA to FCPGA2 adaptor, but they run about $25. this board only has on board sound

Another choice would be an AOpen MX3WE2 Micro ATX motherboard with onboard Vid, Sound, Lan, No AGP, and 3 PCI slots. These you can find for around $35. You will also need an adaptor for it.

I set up a Chaintech with a 1400 Cele/9500PRO/512mb DDR2100 Cas 2.0 for a co-worker. It works great, and has no problems with games on a 19inch (1280x960) monitor he got for a good price used.
