The president of a sister company of mine just picked up a Dell and needs a printer and scanner.

There isn't really a budget, but they don't want to pay for stuff they aren't going to use. Looking to print decent pictures and scan for faxes. They aren't going to be framing photos or looking for archival quality.

I have a HP 4c scanner and Canon i960 myself and can't see upgrading either. I'd love to scan at 11x17 but the need is so rare it doesn't warrant the cost.

Does it need fax capability, or are they just scanning and faxing from the pc?

If the latter, I'm a fan of my Canon MP620. Prints great. Letter sized scanning area. I scan all my bills and statements to PDF.

I'm using an HP 6310 AIO at home. Very nice, has a built-in network port so you can scan print and fax across the network. Also installed a Brother MFC-7840W at a client's office which has wi-fi as well as a network port. Never tried scanning over the network with the Brother though... Both units were about $100-150 IIRC. Inkjet printers with color scanner and fax.

Thanks so far..that MP620 looks good..the HP 6310 I worry about the 2 cartridge system. That Brother is a bit overkill :)

Anyone know something with at least a legal bed? I told them this feature maybe expensive...he is the division president of the homebuilder I work for, so legal sized docs come with the territory...currently he feeds them through a fax machine and wants to go to scanning.

I got a Samsung SCX-4521F and like all multifunction Samsungs that I've used, Printing is great but scanning is always not dark enough and many times crooked. I say go HP...you might have to pay a little more but it's worth it in scanning is necessary

I have the HP7410 which is basically the same unit, except it uses the Tri Color ink cartridge. The new model 8500 is just about identical in specs, but it uses seperate color cartridges. Note that not all stores include the second paper tray, so check what they offer as it may cost a bit more if you want / need the second paper tray.

the second paper tray is the premium I though...with wireless and 4 free color carts...at $388 it's a bit too much...I just realized though the the non-wireless 8500 also is not a legal-sized flatbed :(

Would the Epson Artisan 800 be a better value at the $220-230 price point? They have given up on a legal flatbed as $300+ is more than they want to spend.
