Rome Total War. It combines the best elements of Civilization, but features real time full scale battles.

Civ IV is not a RTS.

It has RTS consistancys. It is like an action/rts.

I am an avid player and fail to see how you can call it an RTS at all. It doesn't have any "action." Are you refereing to the animation when units fight? That is purely for looks and don't mean anything. In fact, you can tell who won the fight before the units even "fight" by looking in the bottom left corner after you attack. Please enlighten us to how Civ IV is a action/rts.

Out of the choices on the poll, I vote Age of Empires III. Reasons why are:

1) I've played it and it is good, though not great. A solid B. Well worth buying.

2) Civ IV and B&W 2 aren't RTS games, and you asked for one. If the choice was "which one of these games" without it needing to be an RTS, I would vote Civ IV by a LONG shot. Awesome game.

3) I haven't played Star Wars: Empire at War

Another game to look at is Rome: Total War. It is a combination RTS/TBS and one of the best games ever made IMO.

No way! It's pure turn-based strategy. And one of the best games ever.

Ditto. Civ is not "Real Time Strategy." It is turned based. Words mean things. Learn them.

# Tech Tree ? Flexible Tech tree allows players more strategic choices for developing their civilizations along unique paths.
# More Civs, Units, and Improvements to enhance and grow your empire.
# Multiplayer ?LAN, Internet, PBEM and Persistent Turn-Based Server (PTBS) offer players all-new strategies and ways to play when competing or cooperating with live opponents.

# Civics ? With the discovery of new techs, civic options can become available. Freedom of speech or slavery? Hereditary rule or open elections? This creates endless government choices and possibilities!
# Religion ? Now there are 7 religions in the game that are unlocked through researching. When unlocked, the religion spreads through a player's empire allowing them to use the religion to help manage happiness, gain gold and create Great Prophets.
# Great People - As the player uses specialists they gain Great People points in the city that is utilizing the specialists. Great People include the Artist, Tycoon, Prophet, Engineer, & Scientist. They can be used to get free techs, start Golden Ages, or join a city to increase its output.
# Promotions ? Each unit has a promotion path that emphasizes specific unit traits. Promotions include bonuses to Attack/Defend on specific terrains/features, movement bonuses, sight/visibility bonuses and increased withdrawal chances.
# In-Game Movies ? Civ IV will have over 70 in-game movies

I said consistancys, its should remind you of a RTS in some senses more than a different form of game such as platform, etc.

Blizzard can't make good single player RTS games. The Warcraft and Starcraft games were both plagued with repetitive gameplay and massive AI cheating.

Out of your list of RTS games, it has to be AoE3.

Out of your list of games, Civ4.

You really need the ENTIRE Homeworld series and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.

They look good, play very well and are some of the most interesting and intriguing RTSes around.

Starcraft and most of the C&C series deserve honourable mentions.

Civilisation IV isnt an RTS yet it has the highest number of votes..... Well if you want a proper RTS then i suggest getting somthing else to tick you over until empire at war gets here. The defunct westwood crew are making it, so itll be like connand and conquer quality!! They left EA thank god and are making games again. Since westwood got taken over RTS has went to hell.

I'll throw another one into the mix just 'cause the deal is so good......Spellforce Platinum for $19 at Gamestop (and other places I would guess). Been out for a couple of years but waited for it to go cheapo and it did.....not only that but you get the original game, sequel and expansion. Pretty fun so far. Kind of an RTS/RPG mix.

Warcraft 3
Rome: Total War
Warhammer 40K

Those are the best RTS out right now, imo.

And Civ IV isn't a RTS, jcover you are dead wrong. /geekpride.

Age of Empires 3 looks good, but haven't played it yet.

Upcoming we have Supreme Commander, the spiritual successor to Total Annihilation.
