Need a good program to stop spyware

Ok so I have ad-aware but it doesn't stop spyware from coming in. Every time I run a scan it finds the same 3-5 malicious files and I need a way to block them from getting in.

Any suggestions?

Here is the best blanket protection available: http://www.mechbgon.com/build/Limited.html

It's free. It doesn't need signature updates. It reinforces your other security measures from tampering. You already have it (assuming you have Win2000 or WinXP). It does require that you use common sense and don't go willy-nilly installing junk that you don't know for sure is safe. Naturally, using a Limited account won't remove stuff you already let in the door, but more on that below.

Also:

  • Keep your PC updated by turning on your Automatic Updates feature in Control Panel, and by visiting Microsoft Update to get it up to speed right away.
  • Use AOL Kaspersky antivirus software, minus the security toolbar (mech narrates feature setup in a screencapture movie). Lots of spyware/adware gets installed by Trojans and exploits that an antivirus program will detect and block.
  • Since Windows Defender is free and provides real-time protection against stuff it recognizes, you might want to throw that on there too.
  • Run your antispyware scans in Safe Mode and see if that helps stuff stay gone.
  • See John's spyware/adware removal guide and the Consolidated Security Thread.
