Need a good printer and scanner combo

I need a printer and scanner combo to print mainly documents, some photos and occasionaly scan text or pictures so it does not have to be the best one out there. It should be less than $200, have pretty fast printing speed, good photo priner, text should be sharp, fax would be nice but not really a must, preferably an Epson because I've been satisfied with all the printers I've had with them, I don't like the Hewlett Packard software that much but I'll live with it if the printer/scanner combo is really great. Mainly I'm just looking for the best quality for the money I spend. Does anyone have any recommendations?

yeah, the canon seems like a pretty good deal..does anyone know how the canon mp 780 compares to the epson cx6600 quality wise? or any others that are really good that I should consider?

The curse of the lower price Epsons is a high probability the printhead will clog.
But quality will likely be OK. But the Canon MP780 is based on the ip4000 printer engine
and that also gets universal raves on quality and durability. With a user servicable printhead that
can be removed and cleaned in the super remote possibility it ever clogs. Not so with the Epson thats factory service only.

But its on per page ink consumable costs that the MP780 shines. Slightly better than the best Epsons
and light years ahead of HP's and Lexmarks. Since the MP780 uses the easily refillable BCI-3&6
cartridge family, OEM cartridges offer low cost printing-----but pair them with readily available third
party cartridges and you easily get below a penny a page for B/w text.

Beware of the newest Canon's that use the new chipped cartridges in the BCI-5 and CLI-8 cartridge families. They still offer the best consumable costs of any printers using OEM ink but you can forget using third party cartridges.

I have a MP 730, kinda similar to the MP 780 in that it can print, copy, scan, and fax. Given my druthers I would rather have the the MP780. But I got a hecka of a buy on my MP 730 on the used market----and its an awesome unit.

Worry less about initial purchase cost------get a unit that does what you want, will be cheap to operate, and will last.------and at $200. I would recommend the MP780--and check that it may be office max not Staples.

You can find cheap printers that will print, copy, fax, and scan for maybe $75.00 less. If you do much printing that $75.00 will be out of your pocket buying replacement cartridges in a hell of a hurry.

But don't take my word for it---google Toms hardware guide, nifty stuff forums, steves digicams, or look at the April /05 issue of consumer reports.

what about the canon mx500? seems to get pretty good ratings for quality. Are Canon printers in general cheaper to operate than Epson and HP or just the MP 780? (lemon law: Thx for the advice and help you gave me so far!)

Yeah I meant mp 500...

The mp500 is one of the new Canon's with chipped cartridges. Basically very similar to the older Canons without the chip. If you plan to use only OEM Canon cartridges, it will make little difference
between the old line and the new line.-----just that you pay about $2.25 more per cartridge to get the chip that rips you off.

If you want to refill or use third part cartridges, the older Canon line up is far better.-----at least until a way is found around the chip.---no progress so far.

The sweet spot printers in the older Canon printer line up are the Canon pixma ip 3000, 4000, and 5000. Other higher end Canon printers exist, but they are specialised photoprinters and not intended for text.-----nor do they have all in one capabilities.

But since you want an all in one printer, you are limited in the Canon line up to printers based on the Canon ip1500 printer engine or the ip4000 printer engine.

Since the ip1500 printer engine choice for full blown print scan copy & fax is the mp390, I should cover that.----it has two curses-----uses small print cartridges and offers no real per page economy
like the MP780-----and add to that -----it now has a street price as high or higher than the MP780 from what I can see.--------but actually, the MP390 is not a bad all in one--offers good quality and can do well on economy when paired with thirdparty cartridges. ( but costs about twice what the MP780 does when using OEM cartridges for per page ink consumable costs ) But I see no compelling reason to get a MP390 when a MP780 is equally priced.

But flash update, just checked the Canon web site and the mp500 lacks the fax and is therefore similar to the MP750.-----not sure about the mx designation you had so I will assume you meant MP.
But basically uses the ip4200 printer engine--which is basically the ip 4000 printer engine with a rip off chip capability added.

But if you can live without a fax, look also for a MP760 which is a MP750 with a scanner good enough to do 35 mm slides.

But if you want per page consumable costs breakdowns on decent quality all in ones ---go to Tom's hardware guides--scroll down to perherals on the left and click--and then scroll down to their all in one printer review.-------or look at April/05 consumer reports.

But you will find the ip4000 comes in at about three cents per page B/w text, eight cents for mixed color, and about eighty cents for an 8x10 photoquality color print--using OEM cartridges.

Only a few Epsons come close------all else can't even begin to compete on per page economy.

thank you again for all the information. It seems like canon seems to be the best choice, now I jsut have to decide between the different models but I think either the mp780 or mp500 would be the best choices

If you can live without the fax, a MP750 or MP760 would probably be a better choice than a MP500.

But price and availability are real jokers in the that deck as I no longer see many on either ebay or in stores. But if you plan to use OEM cartridges, by all means look at the MP500.
