Need a good, portable mic for my T2i

I have very little time to order it (traveling soon). I need a mic that will mount on the T2i's hot-shoe and provide decent interview (close subjects) audio. Portability is my #1 concern. Quality is #2. Price is...for the most part a non-issue, I have some money to spend on this. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have seen hot shoe adapters for holding a microphone on a camcorder, but never on a DSLR. Where would the mic audio cable be connected? Assume it would connect to the Ti2's stereo mic port? Most camcorder hotshoe adapters are for boom mics. For interviews I would suggest a small lavalier.

But, you could start with this and add a larger mic - it would still have to be connected to the Ti2's mic port.

Look at rode mics, I think they have a shotgun type Mic that will mount to a hotshoe

I'm liking this too:

I've seen a Rode in person, they're huge. The Sennheiser looks more low profile.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Kaido: Wow. Thank you, I had no idea the T2i suffered from such a crippling audio issue.

Ended up headed in a different direction than I thought initially - got the Sennheiser MKE 400 (with matching fuzzy animal looking thing) and a Sony PCM-M10 to just forget about the AGC issue entirely. I think I'm going to use a cheap lav plugged into the camera itself so I can have some kind of narration while I'm recording.

The lav is a good idea. Maybe with a bit of imaginative use of velcro it can be adapted to the side of a lens sunshade for comments by a person you are recordning.

Good choice - you've saved yourself a big headache for getting quality audio :awe:

If you have Sony Vegas or Final Cut Pro, check out the PluralEyes software: (Premiere is in beta)

It syncs a secondary soundtrack based on the video's soundtrack, so you don't have to do it manually. Best plugin ever for audio - makes recording to a clean separate track effortless!
