Need a good Notebook Backpack

Hello--
I recently purchased a Dell Latitude D600 Notebook. I'm now shopping for a good backpack to put this notebook in. I'm a graduate student and need to carry it around with me a lot and do not want a messenger-style bag.

I know that Spire makes nice backpacks but they are out of my price range. I'm looking for something in the $50-70 range. Also, what is a good size (cu in?) for a typical notebook backpack capable of carrying books and other items as well?

Just thought some others out there might have backpacks that work well. Its hard to tell from websites how padded and safe certain models are.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I know i'm probably not the answer you have anticipated, but I was looking for a notebook backpad myself and surprisingly i found a lot of those luggage places sell them (you know, at a mall) at bargain prices. I bought one for only 29.99$ CDN (20 dollars US) and it works great. I'm sure you've never heard of the brand High Sierra before.
In my opinion, backpacks are pretty much all the same, which means brand names can make a killing out of you. Just stick with one that is good price and has relatively good padding. The reason why I'm even suggesting cheap backpacks is b/c they work just as well as brand name ones, and also aren't eye candy for ppl checking out what you have underneath that bag to steal for.
You can also try and find some padded small pouches with zipper where you can just throw your laptop in, and it will still be slim enough for you to put that inside any backpack you already have. I think i found one at a mall nearby for 2.99$ 😀

Actually, I have heard of High Sierra. Is that the brand you bought? They seem pretty good to me, at least what I've seen on the web. I guess my main concerns are padding and protection for the notebook. I also need to carry books.

I live in a small town and I don't even know if the "mall" I have here truly qualifies as a mall. I doubt we have stores that sell such items anywhere in this town. But I'll keep looking, thanks for the advice.

Do you think it is necessary to get a sleeve even if the backpack is specifically designed for carrying a notebook? I'm sure it depends, but in general...

yes, get a sleeve. It keeps dust away better. Also with a sleeve, you can even use a crappy regular backpack, which conceals the laptop better.
