I know that I'd like the following for sure -

- The ability to put 4 gig Ram into it..

- Onboard Ethernet

- The ability to upgrade the processor at some point to the AMD 64 FX series (if that's possible)

- Decent onboard sound would be nice too so I don't have to fork out dough for a sound card. (I'm not a sound fanatic).

-----------------------

I really don't know my ass-end from a hole in the ground here. I've swapped out parts galore in my computers before, but this is my first time building one from the ground up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any good websites to check out that have guides to choosing a MoBo would be especially appreciated.

Graci!

I really like the ABIT Max 3. I think it does all you need (not sure about the A64 FX part)

I've heard good things about most of the boards, with the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum seemingly one of the better choices.

All 939 boards should fit your requirements. NForce3 250Gb and Ultra boards will have Gigabit Ethernet on the chipset. All will support an FX part. All the boards will feature some sort of okay onboard sound (nothing too special; software-based codecs I think), but you can spend $25 on Chaintech's AV710 if you want, which is said to have great quality for the price.

Get a Gigabyte Socket 939 board. I just got one for my friend's FX-53 system I built him and it works wonders.

Either of the two MSI mobo's.

Your choice of chipset, either u want the Via or NVIDIA.

I prefer Via.
