DSL is dependent upon your distance to the C.O. (or remote terminal if you are lucky.) www.dslreports.com/coinfo will give you your C.O. information and hopefully a C.O. address so you can see how far you are from the C.O.. Anything within 2 miles is good. Under 1 mile is Smokin'!

My work office is a couple of blocks from the C.O. and has a maximum rate (down/up) of 6678/825 Kbps capped to 1536/256. The line is easily capable of one of the higher speed packages.

Here are home I am on the end of a 20,400' loop (three miles door to door) and my maximum rate is 633/201 with a 608/160 connection (32 Kbps steps.) I am lucky to have high-speed connection at all.

Both connections have Cayman 3220H modem/routers and reconnect in a few seconds if the connection drops. Even at too far to offer DSL my home DSL, per the modem log, ran problem free for 16 days, bounced three times in eight minutes, and has been steady for the past 6 days.

Your DSL connection is provided by SBC/ASI and is largely independent of your ISP selection. It will be good or bad depending on your distance and cable no matter which ISP you select.

I don't know cable companies, but from what I've heard they can be good or bad depending upon location. You would have to ask your neighbors whether or not THEY have good cable service.

i have earthlink here in SC and as far as service reliability goes i have no problems with it. I think it has only gone down once in the last year and that was for about 6 hours.

however, it is rather expensive for the service i'm getting (1.5 down / 256k up @ $55/month) and i don't really like the fact that they are outsourcing most of their support overseas so i'm switching to charter next month.

i frankly have tried both ( dsl and cable ) and i dont care ... have got good speeds with both.. so as long as they officially have fast speeds ill be satisfied ...

Im trying to see if cox is available in my area but its saying my address is wrong ( wtf ?? ) .. though it seems to be available in southington ( 20-30 miles away ) and meridien...can u guys temme if ur havin any luck?

btw im gonna be living on 1800 aspen drive, hamden ct 06518..

im on comcast and they rate the speeds 3mb/256kbps. i get around 2.8 down so im very happy with that.

Move to Korea, where typical broadband if 50Mbps, or Japan where it is 11. Cable and phone companies are using choke hold tactics on US consumers to keep us in the dark ages and to fatten their bottom line.
