Need a good comfortable office desk

I work from home 3 days a week and my glass desk, while nice looking, is absolute crap for ergonomics and its finally starting to take its toll.

Any recs on a good comfortable ergonomic desk? I need it to be comfortable for a full work day (8+ hours)

I jokingly told my wife I was going to buy a used cubicle and put it in my office

I'd prefer to stay under $200 for the desk if possible because i'll need to get a chair as well, but i'm willing to go over by a bit if necessary.

Also, the two styles that will fit the best in my office is a corner or standard straight desk.

Try a used office furniture store. You can often find really good chairs in good condition far below new cost. The chair I'm sitting right now is a Steelcase that retails for $750. I paid $75 used and it is barely used.

I got my desk at a used office furniture store. I wanted that was quite deep, go against a wall and have a credenza above it.

I paid ~$300 for a very high quality one about 12 years ago; it's survived 3 moves and it barely any worse for wear.

Herman Miller chairs are the best. I love my Areon Be prepared to spend $$$ though.

The gas pistons in the chairs have a finite life. Beware, because corps know what it is, and generally sell their chairs just before it expires, but if you can get a newer one from an out of business then you might have something.

Hmm under $200 kind of limits your selection. The Ikea Gallant series seems to have a following with the IT crowd because it's fairly sturdy for a low price, has an option for a curved corner where you sit (comfy), and has adjustable height.

Maybe you can try to look for some adjustable desk legs at IKEA (they range from $20~$40 and sometimes you can find them half-priced at their discounted section) and pick up a table top at Home Depot. The legs are sturdy and being able to adjust the table height to my liking is just great. One downside is there are no drawers... unless you make your own.

I thought he said $200 for the desk alone and a separate budget for the chair. Like I said, the desk hardly matters so long as it's the correct height for him, thus the guide on how to figure that dimension out, though I do realize that if he's sub-$200 for the desk, a $700+ chair is probably not within his reach, however, I think he should consider it because of the long-term benefits.

In the [H] thread, one of the neat things I saw someone do was to buy a countertop from Ikea, then mount it using the desk legs. Seemed like a pretty sweet idea; super sturdy computer work area with huge desk space for cheap.

The IKEA table tops are nice too especially if you can find a clean/undamaged one in the discount area for half price.

If there is an IKEA nearby, OP you should definitely check it out. My desk legs including the table top (23"x36") cost me about $30.

Im actually thinking I may get the Ikea Frederick, with the adjustable height top and rounded edge, it should be a marked improvement in comfort. Going with the wife to Ikea Tampa tomm to check it out.

The Fredrick is Ikea's replacement for the famous "Jerker" line which seems to be the staple geek desk for a long time.

Did you end up picking up the Fredrick, and if so, what do you think of it? I was thinking about buying one myself.

Ikea makes some nice desks if you're looking to buy something cheap. When you get into the higher price ranges, you get something like this, the ultimate computer geek desk:

I'm using one of those tables with the folding metal legs. Its a POS, but it get's the job done. Of course, I am in my 11 year in using an $800 office chair I bought from Office Deport for $180. The chair makes a world of difference.

Cool. I am also in the market for a new desk after my Walmart special fell apart during my last move. Ikea Gallant series looks like exactly what I want. A big flat height adjustable surface!
