Whats a good stable anti virus program that works well with windowsXP Pro?

I tried Norton Anti Virus 2001 but it freezes a lot.

Thanks

Gretzky, NAV 2001 IS NOT Win XP compatible. You should have received a warning when you tried installing it on Win XP. NAV 2002 IS XP compatible, this is the reason you are running into system freezes.

Taken from the Symantec wesite:

<< Which version of Norton AntiVirus is compatible with Windows XP?
Situation:
You upgraded to Microsoft Windows XP or purchased a new computer with Windows XP preinstalled. You want to know which version of Norton AntiVirus is compatible with the Windows XP operating system.
Solution:
Only Norton AntiVirus 2002 is compatible with Windows XP and has received Windows XP logo certification from Microsoft. Previous versions of Norton AntiVirus do not support Microsoft Windows XP, and we highly recommended that you upgrade to Norton AntiVirus 2002.

Hope this helps 🙂

Yeah, another vote for AVG I've been using it for a couple of weeks now. I was using Norton Anti Virus but I refuse to shell out again to upgrade to version 6 (to get the XP compatability).

I've been using Norton AV 2002 since I've had XP, no problems. I was surprised because I swore off NAV because of it's invasiveness, and had been using IPE which wasn't upgraded for XP.\
Anyway, no probs with NAV on my system, no conflicts or BSOD which I had with NAV a couple years ago.

Another vote for AVG,easy and simple to use with rock solid stability with WinXP,infact I use it on both my 98 and WinXP PCs with no problems.

Go with AVG, unless you like paying for Norton, etc. AVG works great with XP, 2000, Me, 98, etc., and is free. Why would you pay for something else?

Can AVG virus def's be updated within the program? Will it prompt you when new scanner versions and new virus defs come out? I need this for a friend

Or else if your like me, can you make it not load at startup so as to not increase your startup time and not have to use resources having it always running in the background, then just right click a file to manually scan it?

Mcafee sucks, sorry. Although I will say that Mcafee's been very, very good to me. I make $75/hr fixing people's PC's that it has hosed.

So can AVG file scan option be integrated into Explorer's right click menu, and not have it always running?

I'm getting ready to remove Mcafee 6.x from a friend's PC since it's increased the system boot time to a couple of minutes, and has slowed down everything in Windows.

Yes. But leaving it running for "real time" protection uses very little resources and adds only about literally 2 seconds to the boot time. It's never interfered with anything on my PC, either.

That's Mcafee for you.

Forgot to ask, since their McAfee's has probably already been registered, what's the procedure one has to go through when they sell registered software?

They would have to surrender ALL their materials and media for the software to the new owner, and destroy any backup copies they might have made. I don't think Mcafee's licensing scheme really has provisions for transfer of ownership, so it's likely that the new owners would have to continue using services under the previous owner's identity. In other words, I don't think Macafee will "re-register" the software in a new owner's name. But I don't know that for sure...
