Need a free antivirus solution for Server 2000

Among the numerous computers I own is a 450Mhz machine running Windows Advanced Server 2000, which handles some minor DHCP stuff and run my Tribes server. (Old-school, baby!) I used to have AVG installed to keep it virus free, but a while ago (like a year ago I think) Grisoft finally realized that Server 2000 did in fact count as a server OS, and thus prevented AVG from being installed on it. I'm now stuck without any AV solution for that computer because, frankly, it's not really worth any non-trivial amount of money to protect it, much less the prices I've seen quoted for a server OS-allowed AV program.

Now I've been lucky so far and even if the absolute worst happens to the machine all it means is that I'm going to have to reformat and install normal 2k this time around. I'd still rather avoid that, so I'm hoping the power of Anandtech will bring to my attention some overlooked free AV program I can use on Server 2k. Ideas?

Wow. $40 is a LOT better than anything else I've been quoted. I'd still rather find something free, but if I can't then that'll do. Thanks.

But yes, still hoping for free. :p

Yeah, CA eTrust 8.x or earlier can be purchased in single-license quantities for not much money. Additionally, once the original license runs out, you can find 3-year maintenance licenses for about $13 a year.

Has this situation changed at all?

I use a Win2k3 box as a development playground at home as my actual development PC for personal things (Win2k3 due to the 10-connection limit to IIS in Windows XP and I'm not yet ready to move to Vista on this box) and would like to get a decent AV solution. I have several spare Avast Pro licenses but they won't let me use them (pisses me off!). They want me to pay $300 for a year's worth of AV which is ridiculous considering this isn't even a work-related computer!

You could try Comodo A/V. It's still beta, and doesn't officially support 2k3, but it might still work.
