Need a firewire port on my comp; will any PCI card do, or do I need one with video software?

I have a JVC digital video camera with a firewire port on it. I'd like to get a PCI card so I can edit video on my computer. I have a few questions:

1) Do I need a special kind of PCI card for digital video? I've seen some with video editing software--but I have my own software that I'd like to use? As long as I have the appropriate driver, won't any firewire card do?

2) For anyone who edits DV on their computer, what are the minimum specs that I will need to get a satisfactory result? Currently I have an old AMD K6-2 550 MHz and a 15 GIG 7200 rpm drive, which I am hoping will just barely cut it. I'd like to build a super-multimedia system (with dual processors, even) in the future, but just want to fool around with DV for the moment.

3) Finally, since I want to build my own super-system, can someone suggest a mobo/processor combo for editing DV? What other components (memory, hard drive, etc.) should I look for. Hmmmm....I don't make much money, so I think I'm gonna have to build this one piece at a time.
