i probably shouldnt even ask since i have so little to spend. cant spend more that $100.

questions:

is there even any real reason to have a dx10 card right now?

what is the benefit of even having dx10?

should i just try to get a higher end dx9 card and get dx 10 later? i dont game on my pc anymore, the console won in the war for me, since i dont have $ to constantly upgrade my pc just to play games. what higher end dx9 card would you recommend me keep an eye out for, keeping in mind i need to spend as little as possible to get the best for the $.

ps: i am not upgrading i have no card at all as i sold my old pc to my sister, i wouldnt need a card if i had not sold the entire pc to her as hers died and i have access to another right now until i get something else up and running.

At the $100 range, if you must have dx10, your best bet would be an 8800gt. I think you can get one for $100 now, someone correct me if I'm wrong. It's a good card and performs well. Will run dx10 games in lower resolutions without an issue.

i am not upgrading as i just sold my older pc, and need a card to go in the new one. the replacement for me is just some older but still quality parts in a 939 sys: opteron 175 dualcore, dfi lanparty sli board, various hdd's including a 74gb raptor and larger storage drives, 2gb of quality ddr1. no vista for me, i am an xp user

i would gather it would be better to go w/ older dx9 card and try to get more for my money, but the question is still out there and i would appreciate some more feedback

If you don't game, watch HD movies or do 3d stuff in general then the video card really doesn't matter. Keep onboard or buy any cheap card...

In theory for general use even a.. rage 3d card would still be fine for today if you could get driver support for it.

if the board wasnt pcie, then i would throw an agp radeon 9700pro that i have laying around in there, but i need pcie

I'd just get a cheap 8800GT or 9600GT and call it a day. That should be plenty(and probably overkill) for any video acceleration or even any GPU-offloaded applications that may come out in the foreseeable future.

XP does not support DX10, so really weather you get a DX10 card or not is a nonissue. But any current card for the most part will be DX10 Compatible. I would still be looking at the above posted cards for your new rig.

.... we ARE talking about a PCI-E slot right?

if i dont plan on running vista then there is no reason to buy a dx10 card anyway...right? so i might as well just buy a higher end dx9 card (or whatever i can afford), if the OS i use does not even support dx10

the best thing is that most "higher end cards" anymore support DX10. I think you would actually have to go LOOKING for one that does not at this point.

Case in point, but cards I pointed you to earlier support DX10.

Also if your doing most your gaming on consoles, that 3850 for 70 dollars, is going to last your a long long time.

dont spend any money if u dont game. dx10 is mostly marketting as most games run fine in dx9

under 100 is not where u want to spend for a gaming videocard

unless u dont game.. then dont upgrade

rifter7, he does have a valid point though. you could always save the dough.
But getting the new card will be nice too.

If you don't game at all on your PC why won't you get something like a HD3450? It's as fast as a 9700Pro if you really want to run a game and costs like what? 20$? It has passive cooling, so no extra noise too.

You definitely don't need DX10 for ANYTHING, not even if you gamed on the PC should you care about DX10 unless you are getting a pretty high end card. Since you're not doing either, it is irrelevant. However there are plenty of low cost DX10 cards now so it might be EQUALLY inexpensive to get a low/mid range DX10 card as a low/mid-range DX9 card; I'd go with the newer series of cards in general even if NOT because you need the DX10 simply to get better future driver support and maybe a bit better video playback capabilities or whatever.

Sometimes you can even get something like a 6200 PCIE freee after rebate from Fry's... certainly not DX10... not even particularly good DX9, but as a system video card for XP / VISTA it does the job. Only limitations are limited video playback hardware acceleration.

Really you should just get what is inexpensive whether DX9 or DX10 with the preference for a better DX10 card if they're about the same price / capabilities as the DX9 models. i.e. $24-$48 will get you plenty of choices in either case.

Here are a couple... if you see something decent like an 6200, HD3450, HD2450, or whatever for under $20, go for it. Otherwise find something in the $20-30-$40 range and get whatever you like, DX10 3650, 3450, 8600GT, they'll all be OK.

Check the anandtech and fatwallet.com hot deals forums for sale listings.. check newegg, sort by price... check frys.com, sort by price and look through the lists for low after-rebate prices..

Nothing you spend $100 (or even $50!) for should be DX9-only. Those parts are all obsolete now.
