need a distro for a really old PC

I just put tinyme on an old compaq I had laying around that had a 433mhz celeron and 256megs of ram and it was actually pretty decent. That still sucked up 50megs of ram after booting though. Puppy I think does a little better.

its just an old piece of junk that my uncle had layin around that he wanted to get running if possible.

I doubt he'll even wanna spend 40 bucks to upgrade the memory to 512mb.

Do u think it will be functional to just do a little web browsing with 64mb of ram and maybe Damn small? or should i try to convince him?

The distribution you choose is largely irrelevant, they all run the same software it's pretty much just the default selection that changes. You can just as easily install Ubuntu (if the installer will run with 64M) and switch to XFCE, E16, FVWM, etc if you want as you can install DSL.

I personally hated DSL. Xubuntu is painful, but doable on no less than 128MB and I would maybe even say no less than 192MB. I would choose Puppy or a stripped down install of Debian with Fluxbox for the gui. I've never tried TinyME though.

Have you seen `links -g`? The use of this switch improves your web browsing experience by allowing you to see pictures.

From the man page:
-g Run Links in graphics mode. If not given, Links will run in text mode. Running in graphics mode means that Links will probe all compiled-in graphics devices and run on the first found. If none found, links will not run in text mode. This option works only if --enable-graphics was given to ./configure.

I ran an old Cyrix 686 and I forget how little memory using an old Red Hat years ago, but I guess that ship has sailed. As far as browsing, Dillo was the answer, and the Black Box Window Manager was also pretty nice and stripped down. Firefox was WAY too heavy for it, as was the Gnome desktop.

Why is xubuntu painful? I am enjoying regular Ubuntu on an 866 MHz, 6 GB HDD, with256 MB memory.

im using puppy now. It worked out OK it seems to be going about the same speed it would if it were running windows 98. Plus its running at 800*600res. But whatever he just wanted to get it somewhat working. Im sure a memory upgrade would help out but well see i guess.
