Well since UT2004 is pretty forgiving when it comes to video performance I would probably suggest a Radeon 9600 AGP video card. I am assuming here that you have an AGP slot.

A good card to get would be the Sapphire Radeon 9600, with 256mb ddr. Its memory bus is 128-bit so its safe. It can be had for about 95 dollars or so. Also Rosewill makes a cheap 9600, but I don't know much about that company.

My son has the same card in his computer and it plays UT2004 very well.

Just make sure you stay away from the cards that have 64-bit memory buses slows them down alot.

edited for spelling issues.

Ouch...wasn't expecting to have to describe it.

Well what is the make and model of your computer? I believe all the xabres were AGP but I could be wrong about that.

Okay take a look inside your case. Do you have something that looks like this?

Picture of APG slot

An AGP slot looks similar to the other pci slots but is offset and ususally is colored a different color (black, brown, red..etc) ....its the one closest to your cpu and memory.

Awesome so a 9600 would work for you. And thats the card I would suggest. Have you installed a video card before?

If not there are several tutorials online you can google for. Good luck.

My Geforce 3 TI 200 runs UT2004 on Medium Settings with an avg of 35-40 FPS. A 9600 will run it at like 60fps with high settings, If Not more.

Well the 256mb would work. And I did suggest that. What are your system specs? UT2004 will probably not run any faster with 256mb than with 128mb. So I would go with the 128mb card instead. Just make sure to get the 128-bit memory interface bus NOT the 64-bit memory interface bus. You will definately see a difference if you get the lower memory interface bus.

Hope that helps.

The 9600se is a 64-bit memory bus card. It would work better than your current card. But for just a few more dollars you could get a card that is not crippled with its memory.

How about this?
128MB 9600Pro, so it will be faster than a 9600 and in your price range.
Never heard of the manufacturer though.
The MSI model is $104 for the same card.

9600 pro would be your best bet.

128 or 256 mb of memory won't make a difference on a 9600, pro or non pro. the card will simply never use that much memory. that's why the 128 and 256 meg cards are the same cost.

FWIW, my brother's machine has a GeForce 4 MX420 and runs UT2004 at 30-45fps @ 1204x768 & medium settings.

I wouldn't use that card unless I had to though.

Go with a 9600 Pro. My other brother's machine has a 9600XT (128MB) and it runs UT2004 at 30-45fps at 1280x1024 & medium/medium-high settings.

Check the For Sale forum for someones leftovers. Great way to save a few bucks. :) If you can find a little more cash, 9700 Pro's sell used for about $120 shipped. Well worth the extra $$ in my opinion.

Good luck.
