Need a decent repeater/usb adapter

I've recently begun playing Battlefield 2142, and in order to play online, I have to network it with my laptop. However, it is quite annoying having to trail a LAN cable across the landing to the place where the laptop gets reception (ableit, not very good reception). What I'm looking for is a decent repeater so that I can get a signal in my room and a USB adapter to plug into my desktop.

I currently use a 108mbps Netgear setup, and the signal would have to go through one floor and then through a single door to get to my computer using a repeater in the position I intend to use.

Does anyone have some suggestions?

Does it have only a repeater mode? or AP with other modes?

 
AP, sorry I don't quite understand? What I'm looking for is essentially a relay, so signal goes from point a to point b, is amplified and is then relayed to point c, the computer.

Repeater is only a bridge, everytime you put another repeater to repeat the signal inbetween the network it will reduce and cut the signal into half.
AP will perform different with WDS.
 
I'm really not good at these things, but I am using a Netgear DG834GT router. The other alternative is something like the dLAN ethernet through the power cables type kit, which could just be plugged into my computer and into the router downstairs.
 
Yeah, Powerline would work. It is rather slow and relatively expensive, but it is the easier to set.

Make sure that you can return the hardware, if it ends up too slow for your purpose.
 
Well, I can't really see there would be a problem. Ok, my computer has gigabit LAN, but the internet is only 2Mbps, so I assume that so long as the LAN is faster than the net, it's all fine and dandy. Besides, the wireless would only be 108, ocmpared to the 85 using that powerline setup.
 
Power line adaptors are "Finicky" and their internal processing speed has very little to do with what they produce, and they are affected by the nature of the house power lines.

You should get 2Mb/sec. My comment was suppose to help not to get stuck with 2 pieces of plastic that cost more than $100 and might not work for you.

Therefore, when it comes unpack carefully, use it immediately and retune if they do not satisfy you.
 
Hmm, mabye it's not the right thing then. What would you suggest to go with the router I mentioned earlier to increase the signal. I assume something like one of the new rangemax ones set as an access point rather than a router would help.
 
You would never know unless you start to experiment.

Half a Bandwidth of a Repeater that gets higher bandwidth because it is closer to the source, can be more than one unit that is far away.

It all depends on the environment.
 
Thought I'd keep this is the thread, I've got a WG102, which acts as a repeater, but I'm unable to get it to work properly with the wireless network. I'm trying to use it as a repeater to boost the signal from the router downstairs. The router is a DG834GT. Does anyone have any ideas of how to fix this? Thanks.
 
Check with Netgear support to make sure that the WG102 can repeat with DG834GT.

Make sure thta you have the latest firmware.

Start with the DG834GT set to regular 801.11g mode (Not SuperG), and disable the security.
 
Turns out my router doesn't support repeater mode, so we're using it as a wired router and the access point as a normal access point connected to it (it's got a better aeirel). I'll try and get hold of another at some point, as it should work properly then. Thanks for the help.
