Which should I go with? It's not my computer but for my wife's. It will be a i7 930 stock clocked, 4gb ddr3, 600-700 power supply. I will use it to game at 1650x1050 maybe 1080p later if we get another monitor. Really looking at 5770 but would be willing to pay for a 5830 if it's worth it. Or maybe a 5750?

(unrelated note) Sad but Nvidia has no competition at the mid range in dx11 or dx 10 for that matter. :(

You want a 5770, if you're willing to spend a little more get the Sapphire Vapor-x or MSI Hawk models. The 5830 isn't worth it unless you can get one for around $200.

The 5830 is about 10% faster than a 5770, but uses more power than a 5870. IMO even $200 is waaaaay too much for less than 4890 performance. The 5830 is a terrible, terrible card which exists only to sell defective 58xx cores to people expecting more from a 58xx series card.

No reason to go to 58xx cards at that resolution. 5770 or 5750 would be fine.

I game on a 5770 at 1920x1080, happy with it. Would like more power in some games, Metro 2033, BFBC2, but i'm gettin really solid gameplay in most games I play.

Get a 5850 now or wait for the gts450,460 to come out in June.
5770 is too weak (especially for 1080p) and the 5830 ....well it sucks unless you get one for under 200$.

I was unaware of the power usage of the 5830.

5770 now would be a fine upgrade. If you can find an aftermarket one with a decent cooler and/or Overclocked then that's even better!

5770 is the only card I think that sells for less than it's MSRP since it often sells for less than 5750 prices. If you bought a few days earlier could have scored a HIS from newegg for $132, but this one is better in my book since it has double lifetime warranty and TD doesn't charge tax (at least for me). Then again it relies on cash back.

btw ignore person claiming 5830 beats these in CF. In CF these cards beat a stock 5870 in the majority of games.

Its a fine upgrade for console ports and if your gaming at 1600x1050.
A game like Metro 2033 or Crysis 1, Warhead or the new Crysis 2 and a slew of other games it just barley cuts it at high settings. Imagine what 1900x1080 res. will do to it.

O.P. if this is card is used for new modern games in 2010 and 2011 you will upgrade again if you get a new monitor.

It's fine for games like Dragon age maxed at 1920 x 1080. For super demanding games you need to turn settings down, but you need to do that even with a 5870. Of course you could also get a second one as well for 5870+ performance.

Metro2033 and Crysis already destroy a GTX480/5970 maxed settings and AA anyway so doesn't matter what anyone gets they'll be disappointed in these games unless they make compromises on visual quality. The point of a midrange card is affordable yet playable and decent in game quality settings, usually 'Medium' for the latest and greatest and older things you can probably get away with maxed on a 5770 @ 1080p.

Thanks for the help so far. I'm looking around and will update when I find something. Is DX11 any good? I'm thinking of just getting a gtx 260 216 or a gtx 280 for my wife's computer. I have a gtx 280 in mine and it runs about anything especially overclocked.

DX11 is better than no DX11. However, a budget midrange card like the 5770 is not powerful enough to enable tesselation in new DX11 titles.

If you're expanding your budget to mid to high $300s for a GTX280 then your best bet is to get a $250 abing OEM 5850 from Tiger Direct (see hot deals) and put the GTX280 out of your machine into your wife's. Heck, mid $300s may even find you a 5870. Money saved, hardware that hasn't been EOLed for 4 months and a faster card -- a win all around.

Good and bad news on the new gpu search.

Bad news wife is throwing a shit fit because I'm upgrading her to a new computer and costs are "too much". Here's the rundown so far.
-HAF 922 case $89 shipped amazon
-megahalems $65 shipped amazon so impressed with mine I had to get one for the wife's. They are fantastic!
-gave her my ga-ex58-ud3r from my rig and I'm using the intel DX58SO in mine the dx58so was extra board
-$99 4gb DDR3 shipped from FS/FT forum
-$216 i7 930 from microcenter
-$140 1 tb hard drive and ocz modular 700w power supply with a $25 rebate which takes it to $115 shipped newegg

I think I did damn good on the build thus far. What do y'all think?

Anyways the new gpu will have to wait for now. Were gonna use the 8800gtx for now.
The good news is she now has a capable power supply that has a 6 and 8pin pci power connectors capable of handling my gtx 280 in my computer. So later down the line when I get a new gpu for my rig she can have the 280 in hers. I'm gonna wait a month or two and see who drops prices first ati or nvidia and go from there.

What does your wife do on the computer? Is she actually gaming? That surely seems like extreme overkill for a facebook box.

If that's the case there are quite a few ways you could shave some money off that build and still get the GPU you want.

Gotta love the shit fits. Let her sit on whats she's got dude. I'm sure it would be fun to upgrade a rig though.

I member going through an afternoon of setting up surround sound for the GF, stealthing wires (PITA) solid placement of speakers. And she gets there to see it and she's PO'd cause I had to move the dogs bed (one of three) to place the sub. Then she said the surrounds scared her.... I almost tackled her.

Now she loves it, but friggen women.

It's a tv box really but I'm a computer geek and like building them. It will be used 99% of the time to record tv and surf the Internet. I might install a couple of games on it and play with it cause my computer is hooked up to our LCD in the living room and sometimes it's better to game on a real monitor. There is no shaving money off the build cause all those parts are bought and paid for. Pretty insane, huh?

Technical answer: Get a 5770 for your stated requirements.
Smart answer: Listen to your wife.
