I'm looking for a new/old video game to occupy my time...

I want an RPG similar to the final fantasy series. A decent plot and control of multiple characters. More strategy than hack& slash would be nice but is not required. I have played more Neverwinter Nights custom modules (major props to Adam Miller) than I care to count, and it is time to move on.

Requirements:
1. Computer based or NES, Super Nintendo, PS1, Gamecube (computer prefered)
2. RPG
3. Good storyline
4. Not multipayer, or fully functional in single player on my PC. (I want to be able to quit at any point)
5. Control a party of characters, not just one

I never played Planescape: Torment and that might be a good one to try...
I loved BG, BG2 and all final fantasys through 9 (8 is the best).

DragonQuest VIII for PS2 is pretty good

Chrono Trigger for SNES, Chrono Cross for PS1 is good too.

NWN2 is coming out in a couple weeks.

Did you ever play Icewind Dale? *Very* similar in play to BG.

Yeah I did play that, but never beat it... Maybe I should try it again...

I actually enjoyed FF8.

There are TONS of games that we could recommend but I will recommend one that rarely gets mentioned. Most people consider FF7 to be the best rpg of all time. The few who have played this game usually (not always) find this one better. That game is Lufia 2: Rise Of The Sinistrals for SNES. You can also play part 1 first but part 2 actually takes place before part 1 and is alot better (graphics, gameplay, storyline) of a game. You can sometimes pick it up on ebay for around $35. A new copy (if you can even find one) will be over $100.

Of course I've played tactics =) About 10 times through, deep dungeon and all other side quests included.

It's great.

Is that an extension of the Dragon Warrior series? My understanding was that it was called Dragon Quest in Japan and Dragon Warrior here...

Hmm I enjoyed the multiplayer version of DS1 but I never got around to DS2. It may come down to whichever is easier & cheaper to get among Planescape, Icewind Dale and DDS2 (in that order as I understand PS:T has easily the best plot whereas DS2 is a D2 clone).

Yep, exactly. If you liked the other ones, you'll most likely enjoy this one even more.
