Need a CPU monitoring tool

Story is my fan controller somehow ended up unplugged and for I don't know how long but my CPU was running @ 89*c. What free monitoring tool will show the temp on the right side of the taskbar?

I have an Asrock X58 Extreme, 1366 socket... Windows 7 64, Xeon 6 core...

help!

edit: also where can I get the latest Prime 95 to do some testing to make sure it isn't burnt up? Or what else can I test it with for reliability ???

Thanks

EDIT2: nm, remembered RealTempGT... just need to have it autostart, but forgot where to put it.. hmmm... i'l find it, thanks :)

RealTemp can if you configure it in settings.
n/m Your edit beat my post.

You didn't hurt that Xeon. These Server chips can run at those temps 24X7. It throttles to reduce frequency/voltage before any damage occurs..

Doesn't matter.. Board makers have to adhere to Intel's specs..

Positive! Intel says you can't burn that chip up. It will shut down first..

If you disable Thermal Monitoring in the BIOS, the CPU WILL exceed Intel's TJunction specs.

I'm not entirely sure if the board will shut down, either, if you disable CPU shutdown temp setting.

Just run coretemp. It will display the temps in the taskbar. It's designed to read the temp of intel Core (TM) processors such as Core 2, Core i3, i5, i7, etc.

BTW Why are you asking where to download the latest version of P95? A google search will find you the latest 64 bit version of that program as well as coretemp.

CPU-Z, GPU-Z, HWMonitor and Coretemp are 4 programs any tweaker should have on hand for an Intel system.

us jaded computer geekers don't save the files, or keep any links to stuff like that

I enabled CPU throttling on the chip.. not sure what it'll do, and there was no cpu shutdown setting for peak temperature threshold. :hmm:

edit: well if it's tweaked out i'll just pick up another Xeon.. might do a X5680 to give my multi and memory a break.. i think the max on all cores is a 25 or 26 multi - *rubs hands and nods head saying "sweeet!"*

edit2: eerr, maybe a X5670.. X5680's are upwards of 375$ the 5670 is ~150$

The chip that I KNOW will break 5Ghz is the X5675, the fastest of the 95 watt Xeons' in LGA 1366, and has turbo Multi of 26. These engineering samples even have A0 stepping, and should overclock very well.

I read where an Intel employee/engineer said that if that chip fails (even at 1.6 volts) Intel will replace it! These aren't desktop I7's. These are Xeon CPU's and if you don't think there's a difference? Do what you want.. I will continue to push mine, because I believe Intel.. I have watched temps when rendering and pushed mine to 96C on most cores. All it does is throttle, and you won't stop that from happening with BIOS settings.

You have a 5675?

edit: btw, how many times did ebay tell us to change our passwords? i got notified twice

Correct answer, use coretemp

I can only do 22X (all cores), but the X5675 will do 25X (all cores), at 95watts it should hit 5Ghz w/air cooling :)

I'd like to see this official statement form Intel stating that it is impossible to burn up the chip regardless of what bios defaults the end user decided to change.

All it does is throttle, and you won't stop that from happening with BIOS settings.

All I know about this subject is from when I was OCing a friend's Q6600, and following a guide online that included the step of disabling TM (Thermal Monitoring). Disabling it prevented the CPU from throttling once it hit TJmax. Temps just kept rising, until I realized what was going on, and shut it down manually. Is 120C good for a Q6600? Hard to tell.

PS. Xeon i7 1366 chips are the same dies as the Desktop i7 1366 chips. Made on the same mfg line. So as far as voltages, temps, or durability goes, they are the same.

So you can show me a 95 watt hex core I7 counter part to these Xeons? ok, Show me.

That's a 130 watt desktop chip. Not the same.. there are NO desktop chips like these "Server model processors". These are server procs with different specs/instructions. It would take ridiculous abuse to kill these Xeon's.

95 watt DP Server chips are defined separately from Desktop/Extreme & cost more than twice as much..
