I am building my first system. I ordered an OEM Xp 1700, so it doenst come with the fan. Could anyone recommend a good, super easy to install, fan. This computer will not be OCed.

Also, I have never used therma grease before, will I need too. If I do could you give me some pointers.

Sorry for such a newb question.

Ive heard the Coolermaster Aero 7+'s are doing quite well, and they have an RPM adjuster too :)

As for thermal grease, you need a good high quality kind, like Arctic Silver 3, or Arctic Silver Céramique. OCZ Ultra 2 is very good as well. The idea is to spread a very thin, but flat and even layer (You can use the edge of a credit card, or a razor blade to spread it) on the small raised part of the processor (The Die/Core) so there is optimal heat trasfer between the core and heatsink, as well as fill in any microscopic valleys in the heatsink (There are always some left from machining ;))

Hope that helps!

The retail HSF combo is actually one of the easiest to install, but I've found that any heatsink that holds all 3 lugs on one side of the socket is easy to work with. The SK6 or SK7 are both excellent coolers, $10 and $15 @ SVC.

As for applying thermal compounds, pictures are worth 1,024 words. :)

Who are the SK6 and SK7 made by?

With the retail Cooler, is thermal grease required, I could have swore that you just clamp it on, I think I read that somewhere.

SK6/7 are both made by Thermalright. IMO, they are the best air cooled heatsink makers right now, they are both good heatsinks, and their top of the line heatsinks (SLK-900/800U cant be beat easily)

I looked at the SK7 on Newegg(they do not sell the sk6), how come it doesnt come with a fan? It looks like it just needs a case fan?

Could anyone recommend another cooler?

Yup, just a case fan. Generally agreed to be one of the best lines of heatsinks out there.

Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative? I think this might be overkill since it is not going to be OC.
