need a converter to convert to AVI

i want to convert some videos on my computer to AVI files to be able to play on my blackberry curve 8320.

if it helps this is what my BB supports for video.

Supported Video Formats:
* MPEG-4 Part 2 (Simple Profile and bvop, including DivX 4)
o File formats - .avi, .3gp, .mp4, .mov
o Video - Up to 320 x 240, up to 800 kbps, up to 30 frames per second
* H.263 (Profile 0 & Profile 3)
o File formats - .avi, .3gp, .mp4, .mov
o Video - up to 320 x 240, up to 800 kbps, up to 30 frames per second
* Windows Media® Video (Simple Profile)
o File formats - .wmv
o Video - Up to 320 x 240, up to 800 kbps, up to 24 frames per second

Note: Windows Media Video is supported in BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.1 and later.

Unsupported Video Formats:
* MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264 / AVC)
* MPEG-4 Part 2 (Advanced Simple Profile)
* H.263+
* DivX 3, 5, 6
* XviD
* 3GPP2 (.3g2)
* Windows Media Video Main/Advanced Profile (.wmv)
* Advanced Systems Format (.asf)
* Real Media (.rm)

What format are the videos in to start with? You could try handbrake or super. If you have the DVD DVDfab works great but you can only convert from DVD.

most are divx movies that have been downloaded.

I wasnt aware that there was different divx formats.
If theres anyway i can check what kind of format they are please let me know.

thanks guys im gonna try handbrake or mediacoder. Are they both free?
