Just got a PS3 so I need to get up to speed. What's the best place to find info on streaming? Right now I'm just using the options from WMP, but it only plays avi and mp4 files; I want to play mkv. Also want to stream Hulu.

For streaming media files on your system, get Tversity. Takes about 5 min to setup. I installed CCCP before Tversity to take care of the codec aspect of the audio/video, and skipped the codec pack that comes w/ Tversity. You can leave everything at default for both CCCP and Tversity. If you have Vista, you'll be prompted to turn off UAC for Tversity during installation. Everything should work smooth as butter if you got your home network setup right. BTW, turn your PS3 on during the installation so Tversity can find your PS3 and vice versa. This is the guide I used for tweaking Tversity, only Step 4: Optimize the Transcoder.

For watching Hulu videos, just bring up PS3's built-in browser (something Xbox 360 doesn't have) and go about browsing and watching videos like you would on your computer.

on the networking side...

Say I have just a laptop with built-in wi-fi, but no access point. Can I still stream tversity over like some kind of ad-hoc network?

What do you mean the codecs is driving you insane? Are the videos not playing on your PS3? I forgot to mention I installed Tversity on a fresh installed Vista. CCCP 1st, then Tversity, and skip the codec pack that came w/ Tversity during installation. If you're installing on an existing XP or Vista OS, you need to clean out all the codecs 1st, then install CCCP. Some people recommend ffdshow, but CCCP already includes that.

Do I uninstall every codec even if it's needed by another program? Is there a good program that will just wipe every codec on my computer?

Re: Codec

There used to be a program called codec sniper that finds all the A/V codecs on your system and lets you delete them from the list. I don't think it's a good idea to delete all the codecs on your existing OS due to software problems and errors. You can look at add/remove programs in control panel and delete any codec packs you've installed and go from there.

What kinda problem are you having w/ Tversity right now? Is Tversity not showing up on PS3? Can't play video?

Re: Networking

Don't know what to tell you since I have no experience networking computers w/o a router.

The only problem I'm having is trying to get some file types working (mkv, mpeg, etc); it keeps showing them as corrupted. Avi works fine though.

Could you be more specific about "if you got your home network setup right"? I can connect to TVersity with my 360, my Xbox with XBMC, my PC, but not with my PS3. It doesn't find any media servers when I search, and half the time it crashes my router partway through the search.

Re: ChaoZ

CCCP has the mkv codec pack in there. If you have ffdshow codec pack already, I would try uninstalling that and install CCCP instead.

Re: Mugs

The only thing I can tell you is I'm using a Linksys WRT54GL w/ DD-WRT firmware. Everything's pretty much default setting w/ the exception of some QoS tweaks and port forwarding for BT. DHCP settings is pretty much default and I limit maximum users to 5. But those are probably irrelevant to why PS3 won't work w/ Tversity on your end.

When I did the installation it went better than I expected. I just turn on my PS3 and went about installing CCCP then Tversity on Vista, and the Tversity icon just popped up under Videos column on PS3 XMB. I didn't have to do media server search on PS3.

I used the CCCP Insurgent and showed that I have a bunch of directshow filters. Don't know if I those are ffdshow. Should I just delete all the filters?

Edit: I came upon this gem: http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/
My 720p files play perfectly. Now I just to find out how to get softsubs to work.
