I have an old AMD K6-2 500Mhz processor that I want to build a cheap system with. What would be a decent, cheap motherboard that I could use to run this chip? Thanks

Only way you might make this work is to get a REALLY cheap board from eBay or the F/S fourm here.

You can get a socket A board and Athlon XP for less than $100, so doing a K6-2 cheap is hard compared to something like that.

I say give that K6-2 to someone who can update their old system with it, and then get an ECS K7SOM+ with pre-mounted Duron 1200 (for around $75). That's complete - including graphics, 4-channel sound, LAN connection, USB 2.0, CPU and fan/heatsink.

Yeah, I figured that would be the case. Would that be the same lost cause if I tried to find a board for a PIII 733 Mhz chip that I have too?

You can still find leftover stock of similar all-in-one boards for socket-370 CPUs like that one. Look for ECS P6STMT or P6STF boards.

I have a nice MSI Slot 1 board for the 733, and an Abit Slotket III adapter if yours is Socket 370.

You can run the K6-2 on a bunch of boards that "don't" support it, most brand name boards that supported Pentium MMX will also support K6-2.

AMD had a 6x multiplier built in for the 2x board setting, so if you were really in a bind, you could use an old Pentium MMX board at 2.8v with a Duron/Athlon/PIII cooler to keep temps in check, at 6x75MHz, giving you 450MHz on the cheap.

Before anyone crys about the K6-2 only supporting 2.2-2.4v core, I've tested the things at 2.8v extensively, and they last for years at that voltage if you keep them cool.

Try Compgeeks, they have boards with intergrated video for that 733Mhz PIII, cheap.

Also, I have someone with a K6-350 who wants your 500Mhz chip. PM me.
