On the market for a cheap laser printer - lots of new ones in the under $150 range out now and looking for:
1. Quality of build and print
2. Full oem toner pack, and inexpensive replacements
My little HP LJ 1000 has been good to me for many years. It only cost $150, came with a full cartridge (which I'm still using) and can spit out pages faster than any inkjet I know. The toner costs 45 bucks most places and it should give you between 4000-4500 pages. Which is about a penny a sheet. I have been able to let the thing sit for months at a time, and when I need it I can print out the first sheet in 10 seconds and it looks fine. No alignment procedures or anything. After the first sheet it takes about 4 seconds to get a print.
HOWEVER, the LJ 1000 is no longer manufactured and I'm not sure how you feel about refurbished printers. So I recommend the HP LJ 1012 or 1020. Do NOT get an 1100. It actually an older model from back in the 90's. Also keep clear of the 1200 series and up. Those are mid-range lasers and you start to pay a lot more.
Interestingly enough, the 1020 has the same specs as the 1000 only with more RAM. HP calls this line entry-level, and thats where I think you should start.
(Final note: ALL hp lasers ship with full toner cartidge.)
I'd suggest a used HP LJ4000 series or higher from the 4XXX series, they last virtualy forever w/ proper maint. and you can get very cheap parts / toner for them.
1200 isn't a midrange printer. In fact it uses the same cartridge as the 1000 does. A midrange printer like the 4000 though is not practical as they cost more and someone looking for a $150 printer doesn't need a 10k yield cartridge. 1012's are good only 2k yield but should be good enough.
Newegg has a Samsung that has great reviews (but for being noisy, not a prob for me) for $70 after rebate with free shipping. Downside is it ship[s with a 1,000p starter toner 🙁
Still, for occasional use it might take me a year to hit 1,000 pages. Any experience with this one?
