Hey guys,
I haven't followed the latest deals and best bang for the buck, so here I am asking! My gf's desktop is (A) a little aged and (B) need more USB ports, badly. She's a relatively light user, but a cheap dual core would be good. Integrated graphics that support Vista Aero (I'm thinking nVidia 6150?) are fine, must have a PCI slot for her TV tuner, and LOTS of USB 2.0 ports. And if possible, re-use her DDR 400 RAM from her current AXP setup.

Is S754 the best bang for the buck? Did they ever release an A64 X2 for S754, I can't remember. What about 939? Or should I actually consider Intel on the cheap side?

BTW, I mean dirt cheap! I thought I saw an A64 X2/mobo combo in the $100 range, that's what I have in mind.

Let loose! :) TIA

Newegg open box biostar nforce 3 board for $18.99 shipped. Add a sempron 2800 for about $35. If you want a dual core with ddr support, the cheapest is an ecs via board with Intel e4300 for around $160 at Fry's.

$18.99 for a mobo, who can argue with that? :D Dual core isn't necessary, but would be rather nice.

ECS with a VIA chipset? Ugh, that sounds like a headache waiting for me.

AM2 A64 X2 is $100, S939 is like $120. Isn't there a decent cheap S939/AM2 board with lots of USB ports? S939 preferred so I can keep the DDR400

that poor girl =D

some alternatives
- ASRock 939Dual-VSTA Socket 939 + X2 3800+ 939 + DDR1 + cheap pci-e GPU or AGP GPU (dirt cheap GeForce4 from ebay or so)
- ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA, PT880 Pro/Ultra + E4300 + DDR1 or DDR2 + cheap pci-e GPU or AGP GPU
- cheap AM2 mATX 6150 or 6100 for about 50,- + AM2 3600+ or 3800+ + 1gig value DDR2 for around 50,-

Yeah I forgot about the ASRock board. That would be neat as I already have an AGP video card in her current system that is fine.

I'll check out those other ones too, thanks!

geeks.com has a cheap S939 MSI OEM mobo that can be re-flashed to MSI bios, along with an 939 X2 3800+ from NewEgg, some DDR, and you're styling. Would need to pick up a PCI-E graphics card though.
