No - I will ride that bike as much as her, but I want it to be primarily "hers"

does she know this?

She knows I am looking for a bike for her. Trust me when I say that she will not be going into the garage unless WE are going for a ride (and even then will probably wait for me to pull the bike outside...)

Get an Electra... lol...

I toyed with the idea of getting one just to run around the beach during those days when my back and ass hurts likes hell from those damn road bikes... ;)

keep your eye open at garage/yard sales.

My brother just picked up a bike in good shape for $75 and he looked it up and it costs 400+ at the store new

Those old school bikes are huge here. You see almost as many of those + recumbents + duallies + chopper bikes as you see road bikes. I even saw with my very own eyes one dude riding down the streets of downtown on one of those ancient huge-front-wheel-and-super-tiny-back-wheel bikes. Like the 8 foot diameter front wheel bikes. And it seemed to be his regular commuter too.

Most nice bike wouldn't end up in a yard sale. Just scan the paper for the for sale section, and look out or call to find out when you local police department have an auction. Another venue for a good used bike is posting board at the local college, or laundromat.

mid width tires on most cheap bikes. good compromise. i hate road tires. sure they are low resistence, but they just arent good for stability when u hit things like potholes/cracks or have to cut through grass/rocks whatever.

The novelty will wear off real quick if she has to do any real distant or up hill with that poor engineered bike.

Seat/weight is not center and seat to pedal is too short therefore you can not apply full power too it.

the goals are comfort & safety.
she's never going uphill or fast with 2 artificial knees.

All bikes have 0 for safety when on the road, because you have very little or no protection. The best is to learn to listen, look, and ride where there are little or no cars.

I'm not sure if that design is going to give you more comfort than other standard bikes, but the only sure thing is that it offer the ability to put your feet on the ground.

Form over function. Sitting position on that bike will force your knees to work harder, because it doesn?t allow full legs extension to utilize the quads. And, the monkey bar design also will tire the arm and shoulder quickly. I personally feel that going for walk/hike will provide more health benefit than riding that thing.

The back and ass pain complaint is understandable because your body has to get use to a bike seat and seating position requires adjustment to minimize back pain. Most people find it is more comfortable to be upright therefore the market serves the demand with MTB & hybrid (less neck and back pain than road bike). A well fitted seat will minimizes sore and softer seat may be the ticket for people that don?t ride often.

I got my Trek 4300 for $300 at a local bike shop and I love it. I'm 5'6 and I had to get the smallest one they had. It was the previous year's model. When I was looking for mine I found nice bikes by Giant and Gary Fisher at that price and lower. The Specialized and Marin were on sale too, but not that cheap.

have you seen the reviews for electras? have you even ridden one?

...and why are you talking about getting the power down from full leg extension on a cruiser... lol

have you seen the reviews for electras?
haven't read any review for it, however my assumtion is that the reviewers didn't use it for long trips or have much experience with it if there is any review on the Electra.

have you even ridden one?
I have ridden many bikes since I were a kid with banana seats & spring seats that put me over the rear wheel and have had friends that are advocated toward the monkey bars when purchasing their bikes (they now purchased and ride MTB while their retro bikes collecting dust in their garage).

and why are you talking about getting the power down from full leg extension on a cruiser
The best way to find out is to test ride the bike for an hour or so (most bike store allow this) and find out for yourself which bike suit your needs. However, a "cruiser" is just a fad that people want to go back the their childhood when they had or yearn for a brand-new banana seat bike come loaded with spokes reflectors, bell/horn, handlebars streamers, and hockey cards. The Electra purpose is for bling, bling and short 2-3 blocks commute not serious day riding at a park/beach.

That's the point. I don't know why you would take a cruiser into a "serious" ride anyway. Heh. I rode an Electra Townie for a whole day at Santa Monica to Redondo and back which is almost 40 miles round trip... probably the most comfortable bike I've ridden which is why i'm toying with the idea of getting one. I have 3 other bikes and having another bike like this would be fun for those recovery days.

Oh and as for the review, you should read Bicycling magazine's review of it... those guys should have enough "experience" about bikes.
