I'm currently 17 and I just got my drivers license, and I'm in need of a car. The car must meet the following criteria:

-Older model vehicle (for cheaper insurance)
-Automatic transmission
-Reliable
-Easy to maintain
-Good safety features
-Decent gas mileage

I'm looking to spend around $6000 for my first car, but I don't want to get something that's going to clean out my wallet in insurance costs. I worked all summer long and saved enough money to buy a car. I now have a part-time job that I will use to pay for my insurance/gas/maintenence costs.

6k will get you a 96/97 Honda Accord, even a Nissan Maxima from the same year.

He's getting his first car - sporty cars and inexperienced drivers are not a good mixture.

If you do not mind uncomfy seats, get an Altima. I have beat the living sh!t out of mine (I decided to no longer care for it since I hate thisi car so much) and it just does not die! That said, the gas mileage blows.

3 grand more and you can probably buy a new Hyundai Accent. I think they are 9800 or around there. Don't know if they are reliable, never owned a Hyundai. Chevrolet man.
