Hey everyone,

Right now, I am a junior in high school. I am one of six people in my school district's IT department and get paid decently well for my services. However, I would like to start a business of my own but I have no clue on what to involve myself in. I am a decent programmer and can do nice looking HTML/basic javascript and CSS pages, but my real skills are in hardware. I know quite a bit about networking and am in the process of preparing for the CCNA test. I would like to work from home and utilize the internet in some fashion. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanx.

Well if we came up with an idea on how to make money sitting on your ass at home, dont you think we'd be doing it?

Yeah... I thought I was da sh^t in high school, programming websites in HTML, Scripts, wiring LANs too. Then I went to college and got put in my place. :)
Which of the following have you studied?
C, C++, JAVA, PERL, VB, VBscript, JavaScript, CGI, ASP, OBDC, SQL, ASSEMBLY, MIPS, MICRO ARCHITECTURE, DATA STRUCTURES, ALGORITHM ANALYSIS... just to name a few. Oh yeah, and HTML. Well, you need to know all of them and a whole lot more, and very well, to be a successful in running your own computer firm. But getting your CCNA degree definitely helps.

If all else fails... start eDonuts.com, "You'll get your donuts in 20 minutes of it's free." I'm at work could really use a donut right now. :(

Agreed. Good luck in finding one college that will teach you all of those well. I would start buying some books on these topics my friend. Learn it, know it, live it. Hmm, I think that was from Fast times at ridgemount high...;)

Well, I'm only a Junior and I've gotten my fair share of knowlege about quite a few of these things in college. Granted, not all of them were taught well in school, but most were okay and they do get you interested to learn more.

Well if you just want some spare cash I would recommend letting the falculty know that you can build them a computer. Just ask the principal if it would be alright and put a flyer in all of thier boxes. You could charge $5.00 for a consultaion. Ask them what they want to do with it and then list out the components they would need. They could then take it to a store to get built or they could have you do it for let's say 10% of the total cost of the hardware. If you do this for 15 teachers there is a good chance that they would recommend you for thier friends as well. For thier friends you could raise the price a little.

The majority of it can be done at home. For the consultation just do it via phone or email and give them a quote. You could also recommend places for them to purchase it at either way you get $5. If you do it then for the purchases I would recommend getting your own credit card and use that for the purchasing of the equipment. That way if it runs over the estimated amount you can shown them proof. But if you get a discount on something they will never have to know. Have everything shipped to your house where you can then put it together and bring it with you to school the next day. If you think about it if they spend $1,500 in parts you make $150+ for an hour or two of work. Also, you could build a very good credit history to boot.
