Need a blu ray burner

So... I just bought the wife a new Canon MF-300 hi-def camcorder... now I need a blu ray burner so she can burn her home movies to disc.

Need the ability to burn the AVCHD movies so they will play on my PS3 &
blu ray players. Also would like the ability to burn 50GB of data onto a BR disc to backup my PC files/pictures/etc.

I'm hoping that the new burner comes with some sort of software...
I currently have Roxio Creator 9.0 or 10.0 basic, which im not sure is new enough to work with blu ray as a data burner. So it would be nice if the new burner came with a newer version of roxio or or some other burning software.

However, I was forward thinking and bought Sony Vegas HD Studio 10 with her camera.


Budget is $150 or less.

Can't Vegas master Blu-rays?

This LG is the cheapest on Newegg, and LG is a decent brand.

Vegas is a movie studio... the software I want is for burning and copying DATA DVD's...
roxio creator classic or nero or something of the like.

The Sony Vegas HD Studio 10 should definitely be able to master to Bluray but won't make much of a backup software.

Roxio Creator 2010 does handle Bluray backups and apparently Roxio Creator Pro 2010 can also master movies just like Vegas.

Then go with Nero Multimedia Suite 10 ... best value .. around $80 and will work with Vista and Windows 7 and XP .. and it can burn Blu Ray .. anything Nero V7 & new can do Blu Ray

To really make it useful, I would put it in an external Vantec case (powered). It can then be used on any machine - Mac or PC, laptop or desktop.

You can burn AVCHD to a conventional DVD. In fact, Vegas/DVD Architect has an export on the drop-down menu specific to the PS3.

It's also not a really good idea to back up important data/family stuff to an optical disc (unless you need ready access -- but you still need a long-term solution).

For critical backups an HDD is the best option --- store it off-site with family or in a safety deposit box.
