Hello All,

I need to build a system on the cheap and have been out of the hardware loop the last 3 years.

I have $300 to spend on board and proc of course want most bang for the buck and would have no issues with overclocking.

please post any suggestions you have

BTW I have a 1000w PSU and will be buying mem, vid card and drives.

Thanks!

looks like newegg is charging $170-$185 for SB i5's
IV ones are $15-20 extra
quality H77 1155 motherboards can be had for about $100
Like this $5 extra for the non matx version
older H61 ones can be had for as low as $45 after rebate ... (wouldn't recommend)
i7 is out of your price range unless you get the crappiest mb you can find.

amd motherboard for $79 (there is a version for $10 more with extra heatsinks if you overclock).
FX-8120 $179
FX-8150 $200

I think AMD is actually a strong contender in that price range. You can get essentially their top of the line CPU+mb for under $300 after tax.
What is your usage scenario ? what programs ?

EDIT: All this generated from a quick look at newegg, deals may vary elsewhere

Z77 boards can be had for down to 80$ and i5 3570K can be had for as low as 190$. Z77 for OC, else a cheaper H77.

I am just back in the loop after 5 years and looked around. I have a daughter that lives near a Micro Center store and she picked up an Intel i5-3570 ($180) and a Gigabyte GA- A77X-UD3H motherboard ($109 when purchased with CPU) I could not find anything close to that for $300. You might take a look at other MBs for that processor but a MB for $110 that I could not find for less than $160 elsewhere. Some of the old salts here may have better ideas but I just wanted to pass mine along
