Need a bit of advice here - folder permissions.

Hi and thanks for reading.

I have two systems networked through a wrt54gs, cat 5. I have the systems seeing each other and all, and for the most part each one can access the other's files just fine. However I'm running into some folders (mainly under USER) that no matter what permissions I set I still get blocked..

What is the best method to allow full complete read/write/delete access to a networked systems hard disc from the other system? It seems like I've done everything needed but still get stopped short by the OS.

Check your firewall settings. I had an issue where my desktop could see and interact with my laptop but not the other way around. I am using Trend's firewall but Microsoft's SP2 firewall was still enabled on the laptop and cutting off access to other PC's on the network. Once I got XP's firewall out of the way, everything worked fine.

What do you mean by under USER? You mean in c:\documents and settings\<user>

Remember you need to set the proper permissions both at the Share level and at the NTFS level.

Say you have a share \\machine1\Share. Set "Change" share permissions on this and the CHange on the NTFS permissions of the folder that share is mapped to.

Yes, like user\dirtyape and anything below, it just stops me and won't let me get any further.

I did go in under advanced and set to 'allow' for all 3 boxes, is that what you mean?

I can get to the other system from one or the other, just certain folders on the shared drives is what I'm a bit lost on I guess.

If the computers are not on a domain then make sure you check both the share permissions as well as the file permissions. That's the only other thing I can think of at the moment.

In Vista, Documents and Settings does not exist. C:\Users\Username
