need a basic word processor...

A friend of mine is using an old hand me down 400 mhz machine for typing out reports & checking email (nothing else)....and they need a basic word processor.

Just some requirements...

Open Office = out. System is too slow to run it & my friend hates it.
Somewhere between OO/Word & Wordpad
Will run on a 400 mhz machine.
Windows XP ( i know...bad idea on a 400 mhz...)

Does anybody know of anything decent that my friend could use?

StarOffice? It's not free though.

Abiword is an excellent choice.

(a) upgrade the CPU so OpenOffice runs better

(b) downgrade the OS (Win2000?) and use an older version of Office (97 was good).

It's probably much cheaper to do (a) unless you use illegal copies of W2K/Office.

I have MS Office XP(has MS word 2002) installed on my 433MHz celeron, 4MB video memory, 168MB system memory, and windows XP.

Runs fine for me 😵

Abiword is excellent. Also, google 'Atlantis Nova'. EasyOffice has a light version for free as well. Finally google for a program called 'Yeah Write'.
