Can anyone recommend a motherboard with at least 8 AHCI configurable SATA 3Gb/s ports? If not I would also accept recommendations for a decent, low cost 4+ port SATA controller card (needs AHCI, PCIe, and SATA 3Gb/s) that would work well with Linux.
My file server's motherboard is very unstable now. I have a RAID5 array with 7 drives + 1 hot swap using Linux software RAID. The current motherboard is an A8N-SLI Deluxe and only has SATA I on 4 of the ports so I'd like to go for AHCI on all 8 from the start.
I was looking at the Asus P5Q Premium and Gigabyte GA-EP45-DQ6 untill I digged down and found that the SiI 5723 may not be what I want. I'm fairly certain that they only support SATA in RAID or in IDE mode (no AHCI.) If I'm wrong please let me know. I looked through all of Asus' offerings and didn't see anything that would suit my needs but haven't had a chance to look at some of the other top manufacturers.
I was also looking at the lower cost 4 port SATA controllers on Newegg (High Point, Adaptec and Rosewill) but I'm not sure how compatible they are with Linux. Any help here would be appreciated.
