Phenom II and a 7850 doesn't need 600W. It would run fine on a quality 430W unit, or if you OC with overvolting, 500W.

Corsair CX500 V2 $41 AR AP shipped (nonmodular, 3yr warranty, 80+)

PCP&C MK III 500W $60 AR shipped, $15 gift card (modular, 5yr warranty, 80+ Bronze)

Rosewill Capstone 450-M $68 AP shipped (modular, 5yr warranty, 80+ Gold)

thanks guys, I'll pass along the info to him. Reason for the 600w recommendation - we plan on unlocking his cpu to 6 cores and OC'ing it a bit along with the GPU. The 600w would also give him some headroom in case he upgrades in the future.

I've read that PSUs are at their efficiency peak at about 50% load, so it's not a bad idea to have more power than is needed.

Should definitely work for now. Let him worry about upgrading it if he ever upgrades stuff in the future.

You still don't need 600watts.

How do you know he won't need 600w in the future? Did you just get halfway through his sentence before responding? lol

Because he's buying a Phenom II and a 7850. That says a lot about the type of money he throws into a system. If his financial investment changes drastically in the future (we're talking 2 high end gpus before he actually NEEDS 600watts or more) he can easily afford a beefier power supply then. Most people doing Phenom II + 7850 and looking into a Rosewill PSU aren't looking to spend that kind of money in a computer, so no he will never need 600 watts.
