Need 4 pin CPU cable extension

I have an Antec P180B with an Asus MB P5B-E. The Coolermaster 600W PS can barely reach the 4 pin on the MB. This is a common problem with the P180.

I am thinking of getting a new video card which probably necessitates this cable extension since the existing cable can barely reach the 4 pin on the MB.

I wonder if you had run into a similar problem and would suggest a place to buy this extension cable.

I googled and did not see anything I like.

Thanks,

Does that mean you're going to buy an extension and splice it on the end of your PSU wires? Also SVC will ship small orders by FCM no insurance/no tracking to keep shipping costs down you just have to be willing to accept shippping risks. Just ask them.

I just spent a long time looking at options. My REAL need is to extend the 4 pin CPU wire by about a couple of inches.

I originally thought I would just buy the connector extension you linked. But on second thought, it would just make my case that much more messy than it is now. Frankly I am ashamed of my wire management compared to some pictures I saw posted at this forum.

I am hoping you would be able to point me to some connectors so I can add that couple of inches to my wire, i.e. cut the wire and add the additional wire to the existing wire. I have not found the connectors that I think are the one to use. The round twist caps that electricians use do not appeal to me since it means I would need 8 of them 4 on each end,

I am really baffled by this really trivial problem. Already spent an hour in my various tool boxes looking for wire and connectors.

:(

@Shadowknight

I remember your post a couple of years ago, when I made up my mind that P180 would be in my next build. I read SilentPC regularly back then.

One day I will redo everything in my case with your printed post as a guide.

Do you mean the "War and Peace"-length thing? I'm working on yet another revision right now. I haven't posted it on SPCR yet, but I've made some changes to the version I posted here at ocforums.

By cut and splice, I meant cut the connector off the end of the 4 PSU wires, cut the mating connector off as far down the extension as you need, slide some shrink tubing up the bare psu wires strip the matching ends of the PSU and extension wires, solder them together, slide the shrink tubing over the solder joints and shrink them. Not too nasty and all you need is soldering equipment and some shrink tubing. Probably cheaper than buying the connector and pins to just dissect the extension.
If you're obsessive you could sleeve over the black shrink or get matching color shrink tubing. I know I've seen it in red, blue, white, and black. Some places sell it by the foot. Lucky you! SVC.com also has the yellow and black (and lots more colors) shrink tubing at 60c/ft. The connectors are at http://www.action-electronics.com if you decide you really need to do that.
If you aren't handy with soldering, you can get crimp-type butt splices for 18-20ga wire at Radio Schlock and many hardware/home improvement/auto parts stores. Use a real crimp tool, not a pair of pliers.

@Zepper

You are a wealth of info. Thanks again. I bought the extension 4 pin wire you linked (12 in long) and used the FCM with some stuffs I don't even know I need. But I did save some money so life is good.

I do have solder equipment but not shrink tube so I will pass on that project for the time being.

@Shadowknight

You are one of the persons I referred to earlier as having wire management and other skills as to make the rest of us mere mortals feel inadequate. The good thing is the P180 does not have a window so nobody can see what a mess I have made of my setup. We are real lucky that you posted here.

Thanks again. I appreciate your comments.
