Need 2k Server help.

Okay here is the deal. I have never setup a 2k server, so I figured i would give it a shot, and mess around with setting up a domain controller on a little p3 500 I have laying around.

So.. I load 2k server on the box.. and boot into windows for the first time, and it brings up the configure your server window.. I figure what the heck, lets try the wizard. So I select the option "This is the only server in my network" (mind you, I have not plugged this thing into my network yet. the Nic is installed and set on default settings at the moment). Then I click next and it ask's me what I want to name my domain.. So I put in "darkspyral" on the first entry, and "com" in the second entry, so that it makes "darkspyral.com" in the "Preview of active directory domain name" box, and "DARKSPYRAL" in the netbios name box... So getting this far I click next, it brings me to another window, that just gives explanations, no settings to choose. So I click next again, and it launches into the configuration.. Now here is where I run into a problem, it gets to the point of Starting the active directory install, and then pops up an error saying "The operation failed with the following error The network location can not be reached"... now I have NO clue what is going on here, as this is new too me, been reading the help files and all but nothing I'm doing is wrong as far as I can tell.. So I whent to this step by step process and reloaded my system exactly (except for instead of booting to floppy I booted to cd.. figured I will give exact detail as too what I have done) and followed these instructions, using the same names... and I still get the exact same error.

Any help at all will be vastly apreciated 🙂
 
Nevermind, I'm a moron....

I figured you can install 2k server and promote it to a Domain controller, BEFORE hooking it up to a hub/router... I guess I was wrong 🙂 I found Q271750 Soooo going to hook a cable up too it and plug it into my spare hub (I don't want it on my network as of yet) and see if it likes that.
 
In this case I got more use out of the KB than google.. which is odd for me lol, There was just TOO MUCH info to surf through when I searched google with the error.. so I whent to MS, and piped in the error...and there... Only one article lol. Now the magic part.. got my domain up, now working on hooking up my sat service and then routing it to the rest of the network. This should be the biggest part of the adventure hehe
 
Ugh.. Just spent the past about 11 hours trying to get my computers to be able to use the satellite internet connection through the server. I have no clue what I'm doing wrong 🙁 All of my systems are logging onto the domain just fine, but none can browse the net, I setup RRAS, and no change. Is there anything special I need to configure?? I have been searching all over, hit google. and the KB, but everything I am finding, I have done. Any Ideas?
 
I assume your using Routing and Remote Access to route the rest of your clients. Have you put in options in the DHCP scope to use your server as the gateway? Do you have 2 NICs in your server and the Sat plugged into one and your local LAN into the other? Need some more info about your setup before we go any further.
 
Yes on all of the above, except the sat, it's a usb networking device.. But I gave up, and whent the easy way.. Demoted my server to a standard server, killed the domain, and am using ICS.. I ran out of time to mess around with it 🙁 which sucks casue I realy wanted to get a domain up in my house WITH internet connection. Maybe next time I get a 10 hour window to mess with it, I will try again.
