Hello - I have been keeing on eye on this thread, it has been a lot of help. I need to buy a new monitor (size range above) mostly for B&W photo editing and moderate FPS gaming - the kid in me wont die.

I purchased a NEC 20wmgx2 - at first I was really happy, two days into using it I noticed purplr banding at the top (when viewed on a white screen), a couple burnt pixels, and when the contrast is set to factory default it buzzed very loud (I need the default setting for Spyder calibration). I contacted NEC, their response was brutal. B/c the monitor is discontinued they no longer had stock, they tried to replace it with a monitor that was worth $230. I told them the replacement should be of equal or greater value as per their warranty.

Long of the short - I had to negotiate w/ some director of customer service, I said the monitor must be between 19 - 22 inches, widescreen, and S - IPS panel, they told me the one they could offer was too big of a jump in price, and if I did not like their offering I did not have to buy their product - I returned it and caution anyone supporting NEC.

Now I am back on the hunt, I am considering the Samsung 215TW or a Dell 2007wfp. I would like an S-IPS panel (hard to come by w/ lotteries) for color reproduction, and the size between 20-22 widescreen.

Any insights would be helpful!!!!

IDK if they are S-IPS panels but i have 2 of the 22in LG WS LCDs and they are great, no issues with either of mine, they work great for gaming and video as well as general use

it's really personal ...
... and a LCD will often vary in quality from the same manufacturer made on the same day on the the same line and with the same model number
:Q

some of the cheapie ACERS look good and others look like crap ... they mostly suffer from being "one person monitors" ... i.e. there is a lot of distortion when viewed outside a narrow vertical viewing angle. My Samsung 205BW is worlds better then my ACER although neither are S-IPS panels.

i'd say the *best* way to choose a monitor - what has worked really well for me - is to buy at least two LCDs from a B&M store [or online with good return policies] and *compare* them side-by-side

NEC has really great products but from the < forum thread on the NEC 2690wuxi...seems like their price/customer service ratio is not proportionate. You are almost at the mercy of your reseller since NEC's service policy is not adequate for the cost of its products (give u refurbed products that are probably returns, and also their dead pixel policy is pretty stringent...even though you just dropped $1500 on a product of theirs). It's a risk you take when buying an NEC product. I bought one anyway, lol.
