I just bought a lava lamp on ebay after seeing how cool my friend's is. I've had it on for 1 1/2 hours and it still isn't doing much. then I noticed on the box it says it takes "2-3 hours" to warm up fully. somehow I think my friend's takes about 20mins. was I swindled?

btw fyi:
it uses a 40w halogen bulb and I don't know how many oz it is

Uh...... It has to warm up for it to work.

The concept is not hard to grasp. :p

probalby depends on how big it is

i have one that's about the size of one of those glass coke bottles (the glass portion of it anyway) and it takes about 20-30 mins

It's not a halogen bulb; it's a standard incandescent.
Also the more you use it the less time it takes for it to get to lava stage, or so it seems.
Make sure you don't leave it on too long or the stuff gets fragmented and bubbly, and never fully recovers.

I have the fairly normal size ones....1 litre bottles I think and they take anywhere between 20 mins and 60 mins depending on which one/style it is.

3 hours seems a bit much....

After a couple of hours the stuff in mine just sits there in one big blob at the bottom...:(

it should take less if you use it regularly

Does that also apply to what you were talking about in the other thread gigapet?

ie:

Was the 10 more minutes for closing the windows, or was it for something else?

do you really want to know that? ew.

There are many imitators out there AFAIK.

Some may not have the exact formula down right so the inherent characteristics of the wax/liquid relationship may not be that good. I've had mine shaken many times and it's always come back to it's original condition. It may take a few days or so but it's always good in the end.

The time it takes to warm up the lamp also depends on the outside ambient temp. During the wintertime i've had the lamp in rather cold conditions and it takes longer. During the summer it takes less time.

I've also had the lamp on for months at a time and it never clumps up.

BTW, my original lamp is almost 21 years old or so. My second one is 8 years old. Both made by the original maker of lamps.

The original Lava Lamp Company ...

Whatever you do don't drop it or shake it ! The liquid is super sensitive, and yeah ; the first time it takes longer to heat up . Go Ravens!

Lava lamps have gone in and out of fashion three times since this thread was created.
