Can you make it so any post older than 10 months has the posting date in bold red so people aren't compelled to reply to it? It'll also make it easier to see who bumped the thread.

We would love to. This specific version of vB does not have the ability, however.

There's a bit of reluctance to run code on a forum this size that hasn't been tested on a forum this size.

If you have an example of a forum of similar size where the threads are automatically locked after a certain period of time, that would be awesome & something we would consider.

There are some vBulletin plugins that do that, but I can't attest to their stability.

I think just coloring the post or adding a notice once the date gets beyond a certain threshold would be less messy than locking threads and wouldn't even require any database modifications.

No example this big, but the forum over at rigs of rods notifies you before you bump a thread. They only have ~60k members though. A forum beta area might be in order, but it might also be too huge of a project.

the rampant hatred of necro threads makes me sick

some of the best information i have ever learned is from necro threads that i never would have found otherwise

They are pretty stable.... I am on city-data.com and they have a special Icon for old replied to threads......

There are a couple threads on this base with that icon as they were recently replied to.. (Right now they are the first 2 @ the top)

www.city-data.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=6

Seems like it would work here also

EDIT:

Im adding a picture because they have both scrolled down.... (The thread about 'CRAIG,AK' in this screenshot has the icon as well as 3 others)
