(NECRO) Thinking of buying a motorcycle......

Old thread revived and moved from Off Topic. admin allisolm

We were visiting with relatives over the holiday weekend and my wife's cousin was showing off his new toy - THIS

I was very impressed, its got that retro Harley thing going on, without the Harley pricetag.

Anyway, I was thinking of getting one.....maybe not the 1800, but they do a 1300 for about $3000 less
Link to 1300

I have never had a motorcycle before, any advice, or useful websites?
I would plan on taking some kind of course before I did buy one.

I suggest this assuming that you have ridden before and will not kill yourself 😉

EDIT
Nevermind, after seeing your edit. Get a beginner bike. Something light with maybe 250 or 500cc and take the MSF.

Beg/borrow a smaller motorcycle and take the MSF rider courses, if you have not. Also the 1300 weighs 661 lbs. Have you considered what it will be like to ride a bike this size? If you have ridden before (quite a bit) then go for it. If not take the course, then think about it again. Even though it is not a sport bike, it is a lot to handle for a n00b, so be careful.

Yeah I did plan on taking a course before I even went to look at them....that way I'd be in a better position to choose

I started riding on a 250 that a friend had. I went out and paid cash for a new 250. After a whole month on that, I purchased a new 600. I rode that for 18 months and moved along to a used 750. I rode that 750 for almost 2 years and bought a brand new 750 in 2001.

Then I had an encounter with a Viper GTS which resulted in this

Be sure and take it slow and spend the coin on the proper gear.

WTF? He just ram into you? He could not have caught you.

Long story and definite flame bait in a motorcycle thread.

Running down the North Dallas Toll. For those who do not know, a complete concrete "express" way (3-4 lanes) that runs North and South in the north part of Dallas. Usually, there are no shoulders and just concrete barriers that seperate North and South lanes.

I was cruising along about 80 and a Viper GTS pulls along and revs. NO way I way I am turning down a chance to embarass a GTS. I reversed my shift pattern and shifted and rolled on him. I took off of him and shut it down around 130. I slowed and let him catch up. Again we raced and I beat him again.

We approched a main Toll pay area at Belt-Line Road. We slowed to around 50-60 through the Toll Booth. I use a Toll Tag and used the Express lane. I rode a stand up wheelie through the Express Lane right next to him. This apparently pissed him off even more. I suppose that could be considered as rubbing a win in . . . 😉

We raced one more time and I just ride ahead of him by about 3 bikes length. We slowed to under a 80-90 and that SOB swerved and clipped the rear of my bike. I have no real recollection of what happened after that. The next thing I remember is seeing the headlights of a truck about to run over me on the Toll.

About 8 emergency vehicles showed up in about 10 mins, the DPS, Dallas police, Fire, Ambulance, etc. There was debris scattered all along the Toll. Traffic was a mess. I was a mess. The bike was totaled.

Anyway, long enough post. I guess if you play, you pay. The worst thing is that a$$ hole never stopped or slowed. Witnesses said he took off and the DPS are still "sorting" through Toll records. I do not think they care since it was a crotch rocket wreck.

Good luck with your bike . . . . and get your gear. It save my a$$. Besides broken bones, my 1 piece leather suit saved my skin. I only had a minor scrape o nthe elbow from where the suit seperated.

Damn! Yeah, you should know better than to show up a show off .... some of those guys have severe "macho" issues... I can't believe he clipped you!!! :| Was that fvcker trying to kill you or what?

I'm looking at getting either a Suzuki GS500e or a Honda Shadow 750 ... the GS500 is cheaper and apparently a really good beginners bike, but I want a cruiser so I can travel.

Hmm.. Thinking about selling my 1999 V-Star 650 Custom. Looks a lot like this but different paint job. Live anywhere near Orange County? 🙂

don't buy something too big or too expensive to learn on, get a cheap ten to fifteen year old 500- 750cc bike to learn on

once you are good/comfortable, sell it off and get your dream machine

wear a helmet, be safe, take a safety course, and....

have fun!!! 🙂

Hi,
I am thinking to get my first bike as well, have a lot of experience riding scooter, for 50cc to 200cc, but never a bike with foot gears.
I am a small guy, 5,5", 140lb, would you recommend a Honda Rebel 250 or a Honda Shadow 650 for me?

Thank you.

Now that is a high quality necro. 14 years, well done.

LOL nice necro!

I'm 6ft @ 220lbs and a Ninja 500 was my first bike almost 5 years ago, i still own it and enjoy it thoroughly. It's plenty in terms of power and it's quite easy to control for a beginner. You could probably get away with a Ninja 300 or a Honda CBR250 to get started. (sorry not familiar with their standard/cruiser lines)

I know it's a necro, but I wanted to add a big up vote for the Ninja 500. It was my first bike in '88, back when they called it the EX500 (to avoid scaring insurance companies with the Ninja term).
It's the perfect beginner bike. Below 7000rpm, it is predictable, and has a enough vibration to let you know it's there. After 7k, it smooths out and has a nice little hit of power to keep you happy beyond your first year.

I don't think Kawasaki makes them any more, booooo. But Honda has picked up the vertical twin ball with their CBR500 models.

But yea, if you want a cruiser, I think the Rebel would be fine around town, but I'd want the 650 if I ever planned to take long rides.

Thanks for the answer, but I want a cruiser style bike, not rally into ninja or that kind of stuff.

2016 marks my 42nd year in the saddle. Started on dirt bikes, moved on to 450 Honda & 650 BSA for a few years before stepping up to Harley in '81.

Don't let ego put you on something you're not ready for. Best advice would be to learn how to ride in the dirt and mud; you'll quickly learn what not to do... and it hurts less than asphalt.

As others have said, it's all about the fun. If you're not having fun you're on the wrong bike.

Actually, the Rebel 250 wouldn't be a bad starter bike. Very small, low seat height... would probably work well for you.

Honda used to make a 450 Rebel, not sure if they still do; that would be another viable alternative.
